Yadkin Mill Village reunion

The 11th annual Yadkin Mill Village reunion will be held at the Yadkin Baptist Church fellowship hall at noon on Saturday, Sept. 23.

Salisbury Elks dontate to CIS

The Salisbury Elks recently donated approximately $2,500 worth of school supplies to Communities in Schools of Rowan and Davidson Counties. These supplies were distributed to children in need with the assistance of a grant from the Elk’s Grand Lodge. The need is great in the area and the Elks saw on opportunity to help the children in our own community.

Rowan Genealogical Society

The Rowan Genealogical Society will be meeting Tuesday, Sept. 19 at 7 p.m. in the Hurley Room at the Salisbury Public Library. Guest speaker will be Patricia Beck, a lifelong resident of this area. She will discuss the genealogical path she followed to document her family’s history.

The Memory Café 

CHINA GROVE — The Memory Café will hold its monthly meeting Tuesday, Sept. 26 at 10:30 a.m. at Gary’s Bar-B-Que in China Grove. The Memory Café provides a safe, caring, and fun environment for anyone experiencing Alzheimer’s or dementia-related symptoms. Loved ones or care partners can also enjoy social interaction at the cafe. Sponsored by Memory Makers of Rowan County, the Memory Café  is held the fourth Tuesday of every month at 10:30 a.m. at Gary’s Bar-B-Que, 620 US-29.

Paintings, drawings, collage, mixed media, and photography entries are currently being accepted for the 2017 Carolina Artists Expo. Entry applications must be turned in by Sept. 18. The show begins on Sept. 26 and runs through Sept. 30. Find details and entry forms at thecarolinaartists.org

Program on Alexis de Tocqueville — ‘Probably the most honored foreigner in American History’ 

The Rowan Tea Party will be hosting a special guest at the Sept. 19 meeting.

Patrick Fields is recognized as an authority on Alexis de Tocqueville, probably the most honored foreigner in American History. Learn why de Tocqueville wrote in 1831 that America was an exceptional nation. Why it was important then — and what about today?

Fields is a graduate of UNC Chapel Hill in History, has taught history in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg school system, and taught English in France and Brazil.

A fundraiser for Faithful Friends Animal Sanctuary: An Afternoon with Joe Mitchell’s Train

A fundraiser for Faithful Friends Animal Sanctuary will be held Sunday, Sept. 24 from 2-5 p.m. featuring a unique opportunity to see and ride a piece of the sanctuary’s history. Purchased in 1950, the fully restored miniature train will be on display and available for rides at a private residence in Lexington. For age 18 and older. Light refreshments will be served. ROCKWELL — The second annual Rockwell Area Hunger Awareness Walk is Sunday, Oct. 1 beginning at 2 p.m. at Rockwell United Methodist Church, 430 E Main St. and will benefit Freedom Christian Worship Center’s food pantry. Salisbury native publishes story

Salisbury native and Kannapolis resident Jessie Lewis Sifford Sr. has self-published a science fiction piece available through Amazon, titled Tides in Time.

Sifford is a retired Navy Veteran, and the father of two children. He worked for more than 25 years at Freightliner. He received his BA in Sociology from Shaw University, and earned an MA in Organizational Leadership from Pfeiffer University. Tides in Time is his first novel.

Kneeling Gardeners approve board

KANNAPOLIS — The Kneeling Gardeners’ monthly meeting was Aug. 28, 2017 at Trinity United Methodist Church. President Jean Kadela welcomed members and guests, chaplain Janelle Murray had devotions and treasurer Anita Parker went over the monthly treasurer’s report.

This meeting was a board meeting. The 2018 proposed schedule of speakers was presented and the 2018 proposed outings for the club. Nominations were taken and Pat Reitford and Emmie Coggins were nominated and approved. The current board of officers was reviewed and approved to be reinstated for 2018: President, Jean Kadela; vice-president, Royce Thomason; secretary, Millie Fink; treasurer, Anita Parker; corresponding secretary, Rose Salois; chaplains, Jan Query/Janette Murray; historian, Ann Rollins; hospitality, Gail Puntch; photographer, Les Puntch; at-Large, Pat Reitford/Emmie Coggins.

Contributions to many of our recipients will be increased in 2018 and reports of that were provided. Tim Downing (Agriculture teacher KMS) would like to build 12 raised beds. A motion was made to donate this, there was a second and the motion carried.

Refreshments were served by Carolyn and Royce Thomason, Jean Kadela and Carlotta Powell.

For those interested in gardening, the next meeting is Sept. 25 at 7 p.m. when Michael Bradshaw from Wild Birds Unlimited will be the speaker.
