Area Sports Briefs: Legion partnering with Intimidators on playoff game

American Legion Post 342 is doing a fundraiser for their many programs, including Legion baseball.

Post 342 has partnered with the Kannapolis Intimidators, who will provide tickets for Post 342 to sell for $10 for their playoff game on Sept. 8 at 7 p.m.

The honor guard will be presenting colors at the game and Rowan Legion AD Mark Cauble will be throwing out the first pitch.

Call Post 342 for tickets at 704-637-1722. The office is open from 9 until 12, Monday through Friday or call Mark at 704-798-9991.

“We would love to have a Rowan Legion type turnout, and you will be helping next year’s Legion team,” Cauble said.

Prep volleyball

Carson (7-1) swept Robinson, 25-18, 25-9 and 25-17.

Mallory Weast had 13 kills. Nancy Gamewell and Sophie Andrews had five kills each. Jaden Vaughn  had eight kills and 14 digs. Grace Thomas had 28 assists. Kary Hales had 10 digs. Lindsay Elmore had four kills and three blocks.

West Rowan (7-0) won against A.L. Brown, 25-5, 25-23 and 25-9.

Prep football

Salisbury’s football game with Mountain Heritage was canceled due to the threat of severe weather on Friday.

The game won’t be made up.

North Rowan-Lexington and East Rowan-South Rowan are set for Monday.

College football

Elon freshman Kortez Weeks (West Rowan) had two catches for 22 yards in a loss at Toledo.

Kyrell Williamson (A.L. Brown) made 11 tackles for Winston-Salem State in Thursday’s win against UNC Pembroke.

College volleyball

Catawba’s Rachel Stanford had 45 assists as the Indians rallied for a five-set win against Montevallo on Friday, following a power failure.

Kimberly Hurtado had 14 kills. Morgan Hester (Carson) had three kills and six digs.
