Waves of light to moderate rain, with embedded thunderstorms, will move across the region today and tonight.

We have a 70 percent chance of showers and storms, with patchy fog possible around 10 a.m. It will be cloudy and 77, with southwest wind at 3-7 mph. A quarter to half inch of rain is possible.

Cloud-to-ground lightning, gusty winds and heavy downpours will accompany the thunderstorms.

Some flooding of low lying or poor drainage areas is possible where storms move repeatedly over the same location.

A few of the thunderstorms may become strong to severe this afternoon and evening, with damaging wind gusts the main threat, mainly across the area along and south of Interstate 85, where the atmosphere may become the most unstable.

Tonight, we have a 60 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, with patchy fog after 10 p.m. It will be cloudy with a low of 57. New rain could amount to a half to three-quarters of an inch.

On Friday, severe weather is possible. The remnants of Harvey will cross the Tennessee Valley, continuing to spread deep moisture and shear across the area.

The chance of showers and storms is 80 percent, with patchy fog before 9 a.m. The high will be 77 with east southeast wind at 5-8 mph. Another half to three- quarters of an inch of rain is expected.

The environment looks like it will support a slight risk for severe thunderstorms capable of producing strong

winds and isolated tornadoes for parts of the area during the afternoon and evening. There will also be a lingering heavy rain threat, with localized flooding possible.

The chance of rain Friday night is 70 percent. It will be mostly cloudy, with a low of 64. East wind of 5-9 mph will shift to the east southeast after midnight. Again, a half to three-quarters of an inch of rain is possible.

Saturday, the chance of showers drops to 20 percent. It will be mostly cloudy and 79, with southwest wind at 5-7 mph. There’s also a 20 percent chance of showers Saturday night before 10. It will be mostly cloudy and 60.

Sunday will be mostly sunny and 82, with a partly cloudy night and a low of 61.

Labor Day will be mostly sunny and 85, with a mostly clear night and a low of 63.

Tuesday will be mostly sunny, too, with a high of 86. The low will be 66.

Then a 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms returns Wednesday, when it will be mostly cloudy and 81.
