KANNAPOLIS — The City Council on Monday approved a measure that extends the hours during which alcohol can be sold on Sundays.

Starting this Sunday, stores and restaurants in Kannapolis can sell alcohol starting at 10 a.m. Previously, alcohol sales were not allowed before noon on Sundays.

Last month, the N.C. General Assembly gave cities and counties the ability to make such a change in Senate Bill 155, also referred to as the “brunch bill.” The Kannapolis City Council gave local approval to the change as part of its consent agenda — used for items without opposition.

Mayor Darrell Hinnant said allowing alcohol sales on Sunday mornings probably won’t change a lot in Kannapolis, but it could help lure businesses downtown as part of the city’s revitalization efforts.

Hinnant said he himself probably won’t take advantage of the “brunch bill” changes.

“I’m not a very big drinker,” he said. “You could probably put all of the drinks I’ve had on one shelf in your refrigerator.”
