China Grove reunion
China Grove High School’s 50th reunion for the class of 1958 was held June 7 at Holiday Inn on Jake Alexander Boulevard.
The planning committee included Earl Atwell, Sylvia Hooks Clanton, Gene McCorkle, Don Morrison, Don Lentz, Myrtle Lentz, Grady Moore, Irene Honbarger Miller, Marcine Moore Miller, Sam Safrit and Pat Haire Shive.
Don Morrison was the master of ceremonies.
Marcine Moore Miller handled finances.
Grady Moore was in charge of correspondence and reminiscing.
Earl Atwell gave the memorial tribute for 12 deceased of the 74 members who graduated.
Class members from China Grove and their spouses are Ruth Swanner Adams and Chuck, Sidney Albright and Linda, Earl Atwell and Sylvia, Paul Bare and Sara, Wade Beaver and Jeanie, Sylvia Hooks Clanton, Betty Jean Freeze Hardy, Louise Overcash Hill and Charlie, Myrtle Lentz, Gene McCorkle and Darlene, Grady Moore and Jo Barkley, James Shinn and Jackie, Sonjia Sickler Staines, Harold Speck and Nancy, Harold Winecoff and Carol, and Arlene Wise. Those from Landis are Lou Crisp Kimball, and Marcine Moore Miller and Gary.
From Salisbury are Dolynn Webb Huffman and Ken, Don Lentz and Sue, Blayne Morgan, Harvey Morgan, Irene Honbarger Miller and Jim. Others included Vienna Goodman Condrey of Linwood, Don and Linda Lipe Eagle of Ocean Isle, Faye Nesbit Meniusand Tommy of Mocksville, Don Morrison and Rachel of Norwood, John Overcash and Judy of Marietta, Ga.
Also, George Rowell of Matthews, Steve Seaboch of Liberty, Sam Safritand Anne of Plafftown, Pat Haire Shiveand Coy of Rockwell, John Sloan of Mount Ulla and Wayne Wilson and Bonnie of Knightdale.
Juanita Cartmen Morrow and friend came from Colorado Springs, Colo., the farthest distance.
Remaining money was donated to Carson High School Bible Class in memory of Jesse Carson.
Greeks in the park
The Graduate Chapter of local Greel sororities and fraternities gathered at Granite Civic Park June 7 to launch plans to form a National Pan-Hellenic Council.
Members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc., Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc. and Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc. along with Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc., Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc., Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc. and Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc. utilized “Greeks in the Park” as a stepping stone to discuss forming a National Pan-Hellenic Council in the Salisbury-Rowan area.Rashad Muhammad, a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc., distributed informational packets on the 50 Million Pound Challenge, a free national health initiative created by Dr. Ian Smith, designed to promote healthy eating and lifestyles.The organizations are planning “Greeks at the Polls,” a community service project which would provide transportation for citizens on Nov. 4, 2008 to voting polls. Each sorority and fraternity will be assigned a specific area of the city to service. Free transportation will target senior citizens housing complexes and public housing developments.
As a community service project the members of the sororities and fraternities donated items to the Battered Women’s Shelter. The organizations also donated more than 130 pounds of food to Rowan Helping Ministries.
Legion Post 106
On June 5, Kennedy-Hall Legion Post 106 in the West Rowan area installed officers for 2008-09. They are: commander, Tom “Ski” Kopetzky; first vice commander, Jim Wittum; second vice commander, Dennis Vivian; judge advocate, B.T. Smith; Chaplain, Tom Hicks; finance officer, Richard Dillon; sergeant-at-arms, Don Blymer.
Installing officer was Clyde “Stick” Waller, past commander of Kennedy-Hall in 1999-2001.
Outgoing commander, Carrol Crawford was thanked for his service.
Ceramics students
Students from the Ellis Park Ceramic Classes did well at the State Ceramic Competition in Columbia, S.C., June 13-14.
In the hobbyist division, Yvonne Fries won three firsts with a Best of Category, a second and two third places.
In the children’s division Destiny Atwen, 10, won a first place.
In the senior citizens division, Jo McDaniels won a first and two seconds, Virginia Graves won two firsts with two best of categories and Frances Ward won a first and two seconds.
Instructor Tricia Hardy, won the “Peggy” (the top award for professionals) best in show, a first, two seconds and a third. Next year, she will be competing in the professional “masters” division since this is the fourth Peggy she has won since she started teaching ceramics in 1989.
