South Salisbury Fire Department members recognized

The South Salisbury Fire Department recently held its annual membership banquet and awards ceremony.

The department also held its fourth annual membership incentive program, recognizing members who attended trainings, obtained certifications, participated in standby assignments and responded to calls in 2016.

Deputy Fire Chief Jason Burnett recognized Fire Chief Bobby Burleyson with a service pin for his 20 years of service to the department.

Retired Fire Chief Cory Orbison was recognized with a gift and his original fire helmet for his 13 years as fire chief from December 2003 through December 2016.

The board of directors recognized Harry Simpson, who at his death was still an active member on the board. Lottie Simpson accepted a plaque in his memory, recognizing more than 14 years as a member of the board.

Each year, the South Salisbury Fire Department recognizes members who have gone above and beyond the requirements to serve the community.

Justin Belk and Tyler Belk received the Harold V. Glover Firefighter of the Year award. Belk joined the department as a volunteer firefighter in 2005, and Belk joined in 2012.

Capt. Robert Hill received the Daniel W. Peters Officer of the Year award and Walter K. Shoaf Medical Responder of the Year award. Hill became a volunteer firefighter in 2013.

Jeff Blake was named the G. Alexander “Pud” Lyerly Rookie of the Year. Blake began his service as a part-time firefighter in 2016.

Safety Officer Keith Boles received the Kevin D. Williams Service Above Self Award. Boles joined as a volunteer firefighter in 1984.

The South Salisbury Fire Department is looking for men and women to serve as volunteers. No experience is necessary to apply. Firefighters, medical responders, drivers and truck operators, and support personnel are needed.
