SALISBURY — Sacred Heart Catholic School inducted new members into its Junior Beta Club on Feb. 3.

The following students were selected:

Fourth grade: Mitchell Allen, Maggie Antosek, Mary Kathryn Aycock, Emma Brown, Carlos Coello, Tony Frank, Maddison Glenn, Krish Kumar, Eva Lamanno, Amanda Nollenberger and Jake Trainor.

Fifth grade: Lily Boldt and Annie Tadiello.

Seventh grade: John Sentilles.

Eighth grade: Shelbee Bryant, Hannah Greene, Colleen Heuser and Siming Jia.

The National Beta Club (often called the “Beta Club” or simply “Beta”) is an organization for fourth- through 12th-grade students in the United States. Its purpose is “to promote the ideals of academic achievement, character, leadership and service among elementary and secondary school students.”

Headquartered in Spartanburg, S.C., the organization has more than 8,750 clubs nationally and internationally.

Beta is an academic honors program with a strong emphasis on community service. It was founded in 1934 by Dr. John W. Harris, a Wofford College professor.

Its motto is “Let us lead by serving others.”

Traditionally, students are awarded membership based on their grades (GPA), or test scores and character traits. Each school chooses which items they will consider for their chapter’s member qualifications.
