North Rowan’s girls basketball team finished its season with a 47-45 loss to Thomasville in the first round of the Central Carolina Conference Tournament.

As the No. 4 seed, the Cavaliers (4-18) were hosting the fifth-seeded Bulldogs (5-16). The teams split their regular-season meetings.

Nia Long did most of the damage for the Bulldogs, scoring 26 points.

North got 14 points from Bea Connor, nine from Tajah Oglesby and six each from Aundrea Godfrey and Brianna White. The game turned when White, North’s leading scorer all season, fouled out in the third quarter.

She was whistled for her fourth foul. Her fifth foul came on a technical when she expressed displeasure at the call to an official.

North had a 3-pointer for the lead late but missed.

North started the season 0-10 but improved in January and February.

Thomasville will play in  a 6 p.m. semifinal against top-seeded Salisbury on Wednesday at Lexington.

South girls lose in OT

South Rowan’s girls had swept Robinson in the regular season, including  56-18 blowout last week, but the Bulldogs got revenge on Monday.

The fifth-seeded Bulldogs beat the fourth-seeded  Raiders, 55-48, in overtime in the South gym.

South Rowan head coach John Davis missed the game. He’s still involved in recovery from surgery to repair a ruptured triceps tendon.

Assistant Laurie Corriher guided the Raiders (14-11), who got 29 points from sophomore Janiya Downs.

Riley Corriher added six points.

Robinson (12-8) got big nights from guards Jayda Glass (22 points) and Jada McMillan (16). Jessie Koerner scored nine.

South should be in the 3A state playoffs when brackets are announced. Robinson advanced to a semifinal meeting with top-seeded Hickory Ridge, the top-ranked team in 3A, on Wednesday at 6 p.m. at Cox Mill.

NR boys advance

North Rowan’s third-seeded boys won at home on Monday in the first round of the Central Carolina Conference Tournament.

The Cavaliers (13-10) held off the sixth-seeded West Davidson Green Dragons, 73-60, despite 25 points by WD’s Scott Hughes and 14 by Drew Wright.

West Davidson is 9-16.

North advanced to play second-seeded Salisbury in a semifinal on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at Lexington.

Bulls roll on

Hickory Ridge’s top-ranked girls led 53-16 at halftime and went on to beat Northwest Cabarrus 70-35 in the first round of the South Piedmont Conference Tournament on Monday.

Gabby Smith scored 13 points for the Ragin’ Bulls (24-0) and pulled down 13 rebounds, while Nia Daniel had 10 points.

Eighth-seeded Northwest Cabarrus (4-20) got 12 points from Braedon Allen and 10 from Trisha Robinson.

Hickory Ridge will take on fourth-seeded Robinson in a Wednesday semifinal at Cox Mill.

Vikings win again

Central Cabarrus’ second-seeded girls overcame a slow start and beat Cox Mill, 51-33, in a first-round SPC tournament game on Monday.

Elanna Peay scored 14 points, while Mahaley Holit had 13 for Central (22-3).

Nya Tillery led the seventh-seeded Chargers (9-15)  with 11 points.

Central will take on Carson in a Thursday semifinal at Cox Mill. Central has beaten Carson (20-5) twice.

Tournaments

In the MECKA tournament, A.L. Brown’s seventh-seeded boys ended their season with an 88-59 loss to second-seeded Mallard Creek in a game played at Hough.

Jordan Campbell scored 41 points for Mallard Creek.

Davie’s teams were eliminated from the CPC tournament.

The seventh-seeded Davie boys lost at No. 2 seed Mount Tabor, 89-74.

The sixth-seeded Davie girls fell to third-seeded Reagan, 59-40.

Lavar Batts Jr. scored 25 points as second-seeded Robinson (18-6) beat seventh-seeded Concord, 85-64, in a South Piedmont Conference Tournament first-round game.

Hamsah Nasirildeen, a Florida State football recruit, dunked for his 1,000th point for the Spiders.

Robinson will take on No. 3 seed Hickory Ridge in a semifinal on Thursday at Cox Mill.

Wendell Moore Jr., one of the nation’s top sophomores, scored 34 points as top-seeded Cox Mill rolled against eighth-seeded Northwest Cabarrus, 90-68, in a first-round SPC matchup.

Cox Mill takes on West Rowan at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday at Cox Mill.

SAC hoops

Charles Clark, who posted the first triple-double in Carson-Newman history, was named SAC Player of the Week.

Salisbury Academy

The Salisbury Academy varsity boys finished second in the WCCAA tournament.

They were the second-seeded team and defeated Tri City Christian in the opening round. In the semi-finals, they topped Concordia. In the finals, they faced top-seeded Hickory Christian. The championship game went into overtime, with Hickory Christian pulling it out, 39-37.

Will Fowler, Jude Lockhart and Charlie Barr made all-conference for the Jaguars (16-4).

Salisbury Academy’s varsity girls came in second in the WCCAA tournament, losing by two points to Sacred Heart in the championship game. All-Conference players for the Jaguar girls were Madelynn Castor, Maggie Dees and Ronni Lilly.

Local golf

Using a Texas Scramble format, the team of Azalee Story, David Huneycutt, Harry Owens, and Lexi Miller edged out the team of Cliff Full, Eileen Full, Bev Cobb and Ty Cobb to emerge victorious in McCanless Couples play.

Huneycutt had the longest putt.
