New support group for parents

Circle of Parents (COP), a parent support group serving families with children from birth to age 5, meets on Mondays starting Sept. 12 from 10-11:30 a.m. Childcare and transportation will be provided at no cost to parents. Meet at New Zion Missionary Baptist Church, 2785 Dunns Mountain Road. AmVets honor long-time member

AmVets Post 460 will host a celebration of life in honor of long-time AmVet member Keith Lucas, on Saturday, Sept. 24. The turkey shoot begins at 2 p.m. and the celebration is at 3 p.m. Food and drinks will be available. Donations may be made to AmVets 460 to benefit the new patio being built in Keith’s honor.

The Kneeling Gardeners

KANNAPOLIS — The Kneeling Gardeners held their monthly meeting Aug. 22 at Trinity UMC. Royce Thomason, president, presided and chaplain Janelle Murray had devotions. Refreshments of homemade pound cake and ice cream sundaes were provided by Royce and Carolyn Thomason. The group approved a budget for 2017 and discussed possible day trips to Metrolina Greenhouse, Listening Lilies Daylily Farm in Locust, a butterfly atrium and UNCC gardens. Primary projects will include the sale of note cards with pictures from their gardens as well as the May plant sale. Betsy Smith from Kannapolis will be speaking in September on decorating. She is a member of the Kneeling Gardeners.Programs for 2017 include terrariums, day lilies, fairy gardens, sustainable gardening, Wild Birds Unlimited, and the genealogy of plants, just to name a few. Anyone interested in gardening is invited to the Sept. 26 meeting at 7 p.m.

Waterworks board members

Faith native composed music for tonight’s PBS 9/11 film 

Cliff Retallick, now of Los Angeles, but who grew up in Faith and still lives there part of the year, has composed music for the PBS film “For the Love of Their Brother” which airs on WTVI at 6 p.m. tonight at 6 p.m.

The film is about a firefighter, Stephen Siller, who lost his life fighting to rescue people from the burning World Trade Centers after running through the Lincoln Tunnel wearing all of his gear. His family now honors him and all who fell that day with a marathon that traces his run through the tunnel and raises money for the charity Tunnels To Towers.

Retallick also contributed an original song to the film, which he performs.
