Cleveland student receives SUBWAY scholarship

Gladys Landaverde of Cleveland has been awarded an educational scholarship from SUBWAY restaurants through the Peter S. Slomianyj Scholarship Fund. The fund is named for the president of Chapel Hill-based North Carolina Subway Group, Inc.

Landaverde is the recipient of a $5,000 SUBWAY scholarship. She is a freshman at Rowan-Cabarrus Community College with plans to transfer to Western Carolina University and study psychology.

She is employed at the SUBWAY sub shop on Statesville Boulevard in Cleveland.

SUBWAY scholarships are awarded annually and administered by the North Carolina Community Foundation. There have been 75 individual scholarship awards since the fund was established in 1995.

Catawba students and faculty member have paper accepted for publication

Two former Catawba College students, now alumnae, and a professor of psychology at Catawba, have had their paper “Does fitness priming influence self- and other-judgments of personal and physical characteristics?” accepted for publication in the Psi Chi Journal.

Kathleen Burris ’16 of Mount Pleasant was lead author on the paper that she co-authored with Dr. Sheila Brownlow and Katherine Lins ’15 of Philadelphia, Pa.

Their study, which began in spring 2014 and continued through spring 2015, examined how priming the potential benefits of moderate or extreme fitness in advice articles influenced self- and other-judgments of internal and external psychological qualities, including perfectionism and preferences for physical slimness.

An earlier version of the research authored by Kathleen Burris garnered her the national Alpha Chi Edwin Gaston Research Award.
