SALISBURY — The name of the woman who died in an accident Thursday on Sherrills Ford Road has been released.

According to Highway Patrol Sergeant G.A. Barger, Latoya Yvette Hoover, 32, from Salisbury, was the driver of the 1999 Pontiac Sunfire that crashed into a Hertz semitruck traveling in the opposite direction.

Barger said Hoover was driving west on Sherrills Ford Road when her car started to run off the road to her right. She overcorrected and ran into the truck.

The driver of the truck, Billy Ray Owensby, Jr., 41, from Statesville, tried to avoid a collision, but ended up T-boning the Pontiac.

Hoover was pronounced deceased by Rowan County EMS on the scene.

Barger mentioned that state troopers have been seeing a trend of drivers running off the road to the right and overcorrecting, not just on Sherrills Ford Road but everywhere.

There were no passengers in either vehicle. Owensby was taken to Novant Health Rowan Medical Center but was not seriously injured.
