SALISBURY — According to a preliminary report from the N.C. Highway Patrol, a woman who was killed Thursday after her vehicle was disabled in the northbound lane of Interstate 85 had been in a crash prior to the one that resulted in her death.

The woman was driving near exit 74 at Julian Road around 5:15 a.m. when her vehicle broke down and stopped in the roadway. The car, a Buick, came to rest in the second lane closest to the right shoulder lane.

A report said the woman had been involved in a collision and was standing in the roadway beside her vehicle when a tractor-trailer, also traveling north, struck the back of the vehicle and hit the woman. The woman’s name was not available Friday.

She was thrown, came to rest in the far left lane and died at the scene. The tractor-trailer and car traveled several hundred feet and came to rest. Both the tractor trailer and Buick ignited.

It’s not known which vehicle caught fire first, a trooper has said.
