Area Sports Briefs: Intimidators win 1-0

The Kannapolis Intimidators held the visiting Hagerstown Suns to two hits and won 1-0 on Saturday.
The Intimidators (47-45 overall, 12-11 second half) used three pitchers in their 11th shutout of the season.
Eddy Alvarez tripled and scored the lone run of the game in the fifth inning on a sac fly by Mason Robbins. Alvarez leads the South Atlantic League with 63 runs scored.
Zach Thompson (3-4) earned the win. He allowed one hit in six innings and struck out four.
Jacob Morris and David Trexler finished the shutout. Trexler struck out the side in the ninth for his sixth save.
The Intimidators and Suns continue their series Sunday at 5:05 p.m.

Minor leagues
Joe Peeler (East Rowan) earned his first pro save when the Seattle Mariners beat the L.A. Angels 2-0 in the Arizona League.
Peeler pitched around two walks to throw a scoreless ninth inning.
Peeler hasn’t allowed a hit in his last four outings.

American Legion
Randolph County won 10-5 against Eastern Randolph on Saturday in the opening game of Area III’s third-place series.

Youth baseball
The East Rowan 9U baseball team lost 3-0 to Glen Allen, Va. and finished third in the Cal Ripken Southeast Regional.

Local golf
Corey Basinger made his third career hole-in-one at the Country Club of Salisbury on Saturday.
Basinger used a 6-iron to ace the 171-yard No. 6 hole.

East-West games
The East-West All-Star basketball games will be played on Monday at the Greensboro Coliseum, with the girls game at 6:30 p.m. and the boys game at 8:30 p.m.
There have been a number of changes to the rosters due to injuries. No local players are in the basketball games this year.
