Area Sports Briefs: Salisbury soccer shuts out Vikings

Salisbury’s soccer team won 2-0 at Central Cabarrus on Thursday.

The Hornets (9-1) got their first goal when Julia Honeycutt whipped a left footed, frozen rope, diagonal ball from 40 yards out and Katie Bullock finished with a one touch.

Bullock returned the favor, finding Honeycutt with a square ball from 25 yards out. Honeycutt punished the ball, finding the back of the net from just outside the 18-yard box.

Juliana Anderson held the shutout in goal, her eighth of the season. Salisbury got outstanding play from Maria Capito and Gracie Nunez. Honeycutt played her best match of the season

“Despite obstacles, we played cohesively and capitalized when given opportunities,” Salisbury coach Matt Parrish said. “The first goal was one of the prettiest scores we’ve managed in  several seasons. It was stupendous.”

Salisbury is at Thomasville on Monday at 6 p.m.

NFL

The NFL has announced the names of 74 players who have been granted special eligibility for the 2015 NFL Draft and 10 players who have graduated with college football eligibility remaining who are also eligible for selection in the April 30-May 2 draft in Chicago. The list includes UNC safety Darien Rankin (Salisbury).

• The Carolina Panthers signed free-agent cornerback Charles Tillman to a one-year contract.

The 6-foot-2, 198-pound Tillman spent his previous 12 seasons in the league with the Chicago Bears, where he was selected to the Pro Bowl in 2011 and 2012. He has started 152 games during his career, but triceps injuries have limited him to 10 games the past two seasons.

Tillman, 34, previously played under Panthers coach Ron Rivera and assistant head coach/secondary Steve Wilks in Chicago.

Tillman leads active defensive backs with 41 forced fumbles and is fourth in interceptions (36) and second with interception returns for touchdowns (eight).

  

Intimidators: 0-1

The Lakewood BlueClaws got a walk-off single in the ninth and beat the Kannapolis Intimidators, 2-1 on Thursday in the SAL opener for both teams.

Jordan Guerrero pitched  six scoreless innings, but the Intimidators  couldn’t provide run support at FirstEnergy Park.

Prep baseball

East Rowan won 12-7 against Kernersville Glenn at Staton Field on Thursday.

The Mustangs (10-7) scored nine runs in the second inning.

Glenn scored two runs in each of the first three innings.

Harrison Bell started and pitched three innings for East Rowan. Tyler Scruggs (3-1) was the winner in relief. Alec Hamilton earned his fourth save.

Samuel Wyrick had the key hit with a bases-loaded triple. Seth Wyrick had two hits. Ike Freeman doubled.

Prep softball

Caroline Forbis was the winning pitcher with six strikeouts and went 4-for-4 at the plate as Salisbury won 5-4 against Concord on  Thursday.

Michaela Lemmon and Katy Wolfe had two hits each for the Hornets.

Prep golf

McCanless played tough on Wednesday and only four golfers broke 40 in the SPC match.

East Rowan shot 158 to win. Nick Lyerly’s 37 was the best score of the day. Logan Shuping and Bryson Sprinkle shot 40s, and Jacob Durham shot 41.

South Rowan shot 165 for second place. Davis Richards (38), Parker Chavis (41), Landon Johnson (42) and Andrew Hubbard (44) were the scorers for the Raiders.

Hickory Ridge placed third at 171.

Bobby Bauer and Joseph Mitchem shot 43s to pace Carson (6th, 186). Coyte Kyles and Cameron Hassard shot 45s to lead West Rowan (7th, 187).  Concord’s Walker Cress and Stephen Carroll shot 38s for the Spiders (4th, 171).

Prep tennis

Salisbury’s boys won 9-0 against North Rowan in a CCC match on Wednesday and stayed undefeated.

Salisbury plays against East Rowan, also undefeated, on Friday at 4 p.m. at Salisbury.

Rowan Hurricanes

The  Rowan Hurricanes hosted a tournament over the weekend in southern Rowan that featured  more than 30 teams, ranging from sixth grade to high school. The Hurricanes have five teams for different age groups.

The Hurricanes 10th-grade girls went 3-0 for first place in their age division. Standouts included North Rowan’s Egypt Alexander, Salisbury’s Maria Capito, Corriher-Lipe’s Janiya Downs and Knox’s Bryanna Troutman.

College baseball

Catawba’s baseball series at Mars Hill has been moved back a day. The Indians will now play Saturday (doubleheader) and Sunday.

    Jacob Barber (Davie) drove in two runs to help Winston-Salem State beat Wingate 7-4 on Wednesday.

     • Pitt Community College won 6-5 against Lenoir CC on Wednesday.

Dustin Ritchie (East Rowan) had two hits, doubled and drove in a run. Jordan Goodman (NW Cabarrus) drove in two runs, and Tanner Bigham (NW Cabarrus) drove in one.

College football

Catawba will hold its annual Blue-White Spring Game at 11 a.m. Saturday.

College tennis

Catawba’s women beat Mars Hill 5-4 on Wednesday for their first SAC win.

Catawba’s women (10-12, 1-9  SAC) lost 8-1 to Queens on Thursday.

• Catawba’s men (13-0, 3-7) beat the Lions 5-4 on Wednesday but lost to Queens 8-1.

College lacrosse

Conner Kennedy scored the winning goal as Catawba’s men’s lacrosse team beat No. 11 Pfeiffer 12-11 in overtime on Wednesday.

Kennedy netted the winner 22 seconds into overtime for the Indians (4-8). Pfeiffer is 9-3.

Goalie Ryan Applegate made 16 saves for Catawba. Kennedy and Zach LaFavre had three goals each.

College golf

Catawba senior Madison Kennedy (Salisbury) was named to the SAC   all-conference first team on Thursday.

Kennedy leads Catawba with a team-low stroke average of 77.24. She’s been All-SAC all four years.

Catawba freshman Alexis Kershaw was honorable mention.   

The  SAC Championship is slated for April 12-14 at  Sevierville Golf Club in Sevierville, Tenn.

Mid. school baseball

Corriher Lipe defeated China Grove 9-0. Chandler Teal went the distance on the bump for the shutout.

Cameron Hurd, Kory Moss, Kade Linton and Jarrid Nelson paced the offense with two hits apiece.

Mid. school tennis

Knox defeated Corriher-Lipe 7-2  on Thursday.

Singles winners for Knox were Roarke Burton, Luke Grenoble, Jander Rodas, Ian Walworth and Gage Gray.  Doubles winners were Burton-Grenoble and Rodas-Walworth.   

Stallions baseball

Sawyer Strickland pitched a five-hitter and struck out four as the Greater Cabarrus Stallions rolled 14-0 against South Stanly in the Yadkin  Valley Diamond Classic on Wednesday n Albemarle.

Noah Jarrett had three hits and four RBIs for the Stallions (13-4).  Hunter Shepherd had three hits. McConner Wallace had two hits. Travis Cone and Isaiah Boger doubled.

Heart of a Champion

A total of 19 student-athletes from NCHSAA member schools will be honored for their outstanding sportsmanship as winners of “Heart of a Champion” recognition.

West Rowan’s Parker Williams is one of the winners.

The students will be honored Saturday at a luncheon  in Chapel Hill.
