Iredell and Rowan authorities say they captured a California sex offender at a Mooresville home a day ago. Officials said the man also attempted to ship marijuana through the mail.

Officials searched a home at 195 Shinnville Road, Mooresville, on Tuesday morning where they found Evilade Alexander Sogbesan. He was located inside the home and has since been placed in the Iredell County Detention Center under a $1 million secured bond.

Sogbesan was stopped in Arizona for a traffic violation a few weeks ago, said Iredell County Sheriff Darren Campbell. Sogbesan gave a fake name, but while searching his car, officials there found a receipt. The receipt indicated Sogbesan shipped a package from California to an address in Mooresville, on the edge of Rowan County, officials said.

Sogbesan admitted to law enforcement he’d shipped marijuana. The package was intercepted by officials and the marijuana was seized.

Sogbesan was released by Arizona authorities before they realized he’d given a fake name. However, through information forwarded to the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office, Sogbesan’s true identity was revealed.

It was determined Sogbesan was a sex offender who’d absconded from California and he was considered to be armed and dangerous, Campbell said.

Detectives conducted hours of surveillance work and were able to identify a home in Iredell County where Sogbesan was living, he said.

Investigators found Sogbesan along with drugs, drug paraphernalia, numerous documents including checks, credit cards, gift cards and several driver’s licenses with Sogbesan’s photo with different names. The items were seized, a statement said.

Sheriff Campbell said further charges are expected and the investigation continues.
