Area Sports Briefs: Livingstone splits; Catawba sweeps at Coker

Livingstone’s unbeaten women survived a scare and held off Fayetteville State 68-67 at Capel Arena on Tuesday.
Former Salisbury High star Doreen Richardson made the bucket that made it a one-point game with 26 seconds left, but she missed a shot at the horn.
Deja Middleton had 22 points and 21 rebounds to lead Fayetteville State’s upset bid. Makayla Williams scored 18. Richardson had six points and five assists.
Cierra York led the fifth-ranked Blue Bears (21-0) with 20 points. Aliyah Grinage scored 18, while Amber Curtis had 16.
Livingstone had a 68-62 lead but went cold down the stretch.

Livingstone men
Even Ty Newman’s 38-point outing wasn’t enough for Livingstone’s men on Tuesday night.
The Blue Bears (14-8, 8-5 CIAA) lost 99-95 in overtime at Fayetteville State’s Capel Arena.
The Broncos (13-11, 6-7) put six men in double figures to offset Newman’s huge game. Newman shot 13-for-20, including 7-for-8 on 3-pointers.
Daryl Traynham scored 20 for the Blue Bears. Eric Mayo had 14, and Hakeem Jackson scored 13.
Livingstone is 5-2 in the Southern Division and goes to J.C. Smith Saturday.

Catawba women
Jada Huntley hit the winning layup with 3.5 seconds remaining, as Catawba’s women’s basketball team rallied for a 67-66 win at Coker on Wednesday.
Zhaquondalee Greer drove and dished to a wide- open Huntley for the winning layup.
Catawba (14-8, 11-6) will take a five-game winning streak into Saturday afternoon’s home matchup with SAC co-leader Anderson.
Catawba led Coker (9-14, 5-12) by 14 in the second half but fell behind by one after late shots by Coker’s Heidrun Kristmundsdottir and Tanesha Stenson.
Terri Rogers had 15 points and eight rebounds, with Huntley adding 14 points and eight boards. Bri Johnson, Greer and Chloe Bully scored 11 each.
Stenson led Coker with 19 points.

Catawba men
Catawba’s men’s basketball team won 65-61 at Coker on Tuesday, continuing a string of down-to-the wire games.
The Indians swept the season series and won on the road for the first time since mid-December. They compensated for 31-percent shooting by making only seven turnovers.
The Indians (11-12, 8-9) won the SAC contest with leading scorer K.J. Arrington sidelined. They are tied for sixth in the 12-team league.
Reggie Perkins scored 14 for the Indians. Ben Sealey, Jameel Taylor and Troy Warren scored 10 each. Warren also had 10 rebounds. Jerrin Morrison had eight rebounds.
Catawba trailed by eight at halftime and by 12 early in the second half.
Donte Samuels led the Cobras with 15 points.

Prep wrestling
Individual regionals start on Friday and continue Saturday.
SPC wrestlers are competing in the 3A Midwest Regional at Piedmont. CCC wrestlers are competing at the 2A Midwest Regional at Parkwood. CPC wrestlers are competing in the 4A Midwest Regional at Northwest Guilford, and MECKA wresters are competing in the 4A West Regional at Hough.
Prep swimming
• The 3A state championships will be held at Cary’s Triangle Aquatic Center on Thursday.
It’s an all-day event starting at 8:45 a.m.
• North Rowan’s Corey Fries qualified for two events in the 1A-2A state meet. Fries was ninth in the 100 free (52.62 seconds) and eighth in the 50 free (22.85).
Prep basketball
The regular season concludes Friday, with conference tournaments scheduled for next week.
Lexington is the host for the CCC tournament. Hickory Ridge is the SPC host.
State playoff pairings will be announced Feb. 21.
The first round of the playoffs is Feb. 24.
• Taylor Martin scored a career-high 19 points to lead West Rowan to a 62-42 win against Cox Mill on Tuesday.
• Damon Johnson scored 16 points in A.L. Brown’s 80-42 loss to West Charlotte on Tuesday.
• Shemya Stanback’s career-high 15 points wasn’t enough for the A.L. Brown girls in a 53-47 loss to West Charlotte on Tuesday.
College swimming
Catawba’s men set two school records on Wednesday’s opening night of the Bluegrass Mountain Conference Swimming Championships at the Mecklenburg Aquatic Center.
Finn Furstenwerth set a new mark in the 1000 free, while the men also set a record in the 800 free relay.
Furstenwerth finished fourth in 9:33.13. Catawba’s Andrew McCollister (Salisbury) placed seventh in 9:48.00, the fourth fastest time in school history.
Catawba’s men were third out of 12 teams after the first day, while the Catawba women are sixth out of 13. Queens tops both standings.
The championships continue through Saturday.
Local golf
Sixty-four GARS members played in foursomes at Crescent this week.
Low ‘A’ Flight player with a net of 63.37 was Gerald Barker.
Low ‘B’ Flight player with a net of 65.16 was Gary Morgan.
Low ‘C’ Flight player with a net of 64.91 was Andy Griffin.
Low ‘D’ Flight player with a net of 64.26 was Leonard Robinson.
Racing
Daniel Hemrick (South Rowan) will have a regular ride in the Camping World Truck Series this season.
Hemric, 24, will drive the No. 14 Chevy Silverado for NTS Motorsports.
Hemric will also race in three ARCA races for NTS, including Daytona in the No. 92 Chevy Impala.
Ryan McKinney will be the crew chief. California Clean Power is the primary sponsor for Daytona and the next race at Atlanta.

State championships are set for this weekend at the JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem.
The championships start at 4 p.m. on Friday with the 1A-2A meet.
