Horizons Unlimited presents an afternoon of fun and learning on Saturday, Feb. 14 for the whole family.

3 p.m.: Free movie in the Planetarium

What if mankind had to leave Earth and somebody forgot to turn the last robot off? The year is 2700 and one special robot is still spending every day doing what he was made for. Soon he is visited by a sleek robot named EVE whom he chases across the galaxy with a pet cockroach and a heroic team of malfunctioning misfit robots. Rated (G)

5 p.m.: Educational Show + Live Sky

$2 per person. “Follow the Drinking Gourd.” Did slaves really use this song as a secret code to find their way to freedom, or is it simply a folk song written to teach about and honor the brave men and women of The Underground Railroad? Our audience will attempt to decode the lyrics as we explore the daytime and nighttime sky for ourselves.

6:30 p.m.: Laser Zeppelin Show

$2 per person. Relive the magical sounds of Led Zeppelin while enjoying a visual treat of custom laser imagery. Parental Guidance suggested; some songs may contain lyrics and images that may be perceived as inappropriate for sensitive audience members.

Black history at Spencer Doll and Toy Museum 

SPENCER — African American doll exhibit: Regardless of one’s cultural background everyone has a story to tell.

Black dolls have played a critical role in building a diverse American society and rich African American culture. Admission fee applies.

African American fashion show: Feb. 28 from  3-5, p.m. $10 admission includes museum admission and refreshments.

African American culture is rooted in East, West and Central Africa. Over time the fashion has modified and/or blended with European cultures and other cultures such as that of Native Americans.

Attendees are encouraged to show off their family heirlooms. Tickets can be purchased at the museum or by phone Thursday- Saturday, 10 a.m.- 4 p.m.

Old Fibre Guild

Who are we? What do we do?

Could you answer these questions about us? The Olde Rowan Fiber Guild can fill that gap in their familiarity with your artistic community.

ORFG is having an open house and membership drive, beginning at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 16, to mix and mingle in the lower reaches of the usual meeting place of the Center for Faith & the Arts. But that’s a separate party.

What will we do? All kinds of crafts and techniques, from spinning, tri-loom weaving, hat blocking, needle tatting.

Experts in these arts will demonstrate, explain and answer your questions about the craft examples all made by our very own ORFG.

For more fun, door prizes will be awarded at random, from hand embroidered placemats to milk bottle masks.

Light refreshments will be served.

At 7:30, guild members and nonmembers will convene to hear about the purpose and history as well as future plans of the organization.

Hear the Moondance Orchestra at The Charles Mack

Established in 2012, the Moondance Orchestra performs a mix of popular favorites. Their versatile vocals, razor sharp rhythm and powerful horn section allow the band to play a varied selection of arrangements from Michael Buble’ to Chicago and Blood Sweat and Tears. The Time Jumpers

Charlotte — Hear The Time Jumpers on Feb. 22 at Knight Theater at Levine Center for the Arts. Ticket prices begin at $20.

Featuring Vince Gill, Kenny Sears, And Ranger Doug Green, the Time Jumpers was formed in 1998 and is comprised of some of the best studio and touring musicians in Nashville.

While Country Music Hall of Famer Vince Gill is a current member of this Bluegrass/country band, it’s the musical collaboration from the band members, each of which has made significant contributions to country music as we know it.

Don Moore exhibit in Statesville

STATESVILLE — Iredell Museums presents “A Continuation of Time and Place” a painting exhibition by Don Moore of Salisbury.

The exhibition will showcase 25 recent paintings by the artist as well as two of his paintings from the museum’s permanent collection.

The theme of the show centers on European history of the early 20th century and artifacts from the museum’s collection will be pared with images in the paintings.

The exhibition runs Feb. 20 until April 3 with a reception on Feb. 20 from 6 to 8 p.m.

 

The Charlotte Jewish Film Festival

Charlotte — The Charlotte Jewish Film Festival (CJFF) starts its 11th season this week with a full slate of award-winning, entertaining and thought-provoking films and value added programming. From February 14 – March 2, the CJFF will be screening 15 films over the course of 18 events.

Downton Abbey themed tea

Hickory — The Hickory Downtown Development Association is seeking artists for the Art Crawls on Thursday, May 21, and on Thursday, Sept. 17. The Downtown Hickory Art Crawl is a juried show. Artists selected by the jury will be invited with no participation fees required.

A day of free music clinics 

Hickory — The Hickory Music Factory will host “A Day of Free Clinics” with Mark Clodfelter (trumpet), Rick Simerly (trombone), and John Alexander (sax). This is an all age event; no reservations are necessary but space will be limited. The clinic will be Feb. 21.
