‘The Colors of Love’

EAST SPENCER — The Guiding Light Missionary Baptist Association will present “The Colors of Love” this evening from 5 until 7 p.m.

The program will feature renowned opera singer Teresa Moore Mitchell, the Church Divas from Henderson Grove and other entertainment. There will be a game show and light refreshments will be served. The Guiding Light Convention Center is located at 308 Boundary St. Admission is $5 and tickets can be purchased from Brenda Rice-McNeely at 704-636-2096 or at the door. The host is the Rev. John E. Jones, moderator.

 

Providence AME Zion observes Men’s Day

Providence AME Zion Church, 2415 Providence Church Road, will celebrate its annual Men’s Day on Sunday at 3 p.m. The guest, of ‘The Old Time Gospel Hour’ will include singers and musicians from around the city. Dinner will be served from 1:30 to 3 p.m. The Rev. Zacharias E. Allen Sr. is host pastor.

 

Antioch pastoral anniversary

GRANITE QUARRY — Antioch Missionary Baptist Church, 602 S. Salisbury Ave., will celebrate the 11th pastoral anniversary of pastor Rickey Johnson with first lady Peggy Johnson and family, on the theme of “A New Direction.”

The 11 a.m. speaker will be the Rev. Mitchell Sewell of Winston-Salem. At 3 p.m. the Rev. Dr. Clary Phelps of Salisbury’s Gethsemane Missionary Baptist Church will speak.

 

Men’s Day at White Rock AME Zion

GRANITE QUARRY — White Rock AME Zion Church will celebrate Men’s Day on Sunday during the 11 a.m. service. The Rev. Gary Withers, assitant pastor at New Life Baptist Church of Concord, will delive the message on the theme of “Men of Purpose.” Lunch will be served after the morning service. Thomas Turner is Men’s Day chairperson. The Rev. Thomas Lee is pastor.

 

The Anti-Bully Project and Gospel Explosion

The Daniel L. Safrit Praise Foundation presents the Anti-Bully Project and Gospel Explosion, on Saturday, Feb. 21.

Groups participating include Poetic Chaos, Promised Generation, GQ-4-Eva, Ice, Sherry Songbird, Choir Bio Cam, Shameka Smith, Rare of Breed, Seviin, Capa and Gezell Fleming. Daniel’s father, Scottie Safrit, will also be speaking.

Ken Turner to sing at Landis First Assembly

LANDIS — Gospel bass singer Ken Turner will be in concert at 10:30 a.m. Sunday at Landis First Assembly, 302 E. Corriher St. Turner, who once sang with the famous Blackwood Brothers Quartet, is well-known in the world of gospel music. He has also sung with the Palmetto state Quartet and with the Dixie Echoes.

His first RCA recording with the Blackwoods won a Grammy Award. Their radio single “Learning to Lead” smashed all existing records by remaining at number one for 18 months. With Ken singing bass, the quartet appeared on TV programs like The Barbara Mandrel Show and Hee Haw. They also sang at the presidential prayer breakfast for former president Jimmy Carter and at several Billy Graham crusades.

Recently, Turner has been singing part-time with Valor Three, a gospel men’s trio from the Statesvile area, and he also sings in solo concerts. He remains one of the most beloved and funniest bass singers in gospel music, but he also has a serious message to share.

 

United Ministerial Alliance joint service

The U.M.A. will host its joint fellowship service at 7 p.m., Sunday February 15, at Hall’s Temple Church, 1129 Bryce Ave. The Rev. Elder Bruce is the host pastor. Bishop Harvey L. Rice, pastor of Salisbury’s Mt. Calvary Holy Church, will deliver the message.

 

Erwin Temple CME mass choir anniversary

The Mass Choir of Erwin Temple CME Church will observe its 19th anniverrsay on Sunday with a special celebration, beginning at 3 p.m. Guest choirs have been invited to participate.

The Mass choir will present a mini-concert for the first part of the celebration. Guest choirs will render two selections each for the second part of the celebration. There will be special recognintons during the afternoon.

Mardi Gras at Mount Zion UCC

CHINA GROVE – Dixieland Jazz will be the music of choice during the 11 a.m. service on Sunday at Mount Zion UCC, 1415 S. Main St. The Jazz Band includes trumpet, Jay Meacham; banjo, Wiley Porter; and clarinet, Andy Paolontonio. Also joining in the fun will be the Mt. Zion Children’s Choir and the Chancel Choir.

At 4 p.m. on Sunday, Mt. Zion will be hosting its annual Death By Chocolate gathering. Bring a chocolate treat to share and join the tasty fun. There will be a special appearance by “Melvis” during the event.

On Tuesday, Feb. 17, from 5:30 p.m. until the syrup runs dry, Mt. Zion is providing a Shrove Tuesday pancake dinner. A love offering will be collected.

Ash Wednesday services will be at noon and 7 p.m.

Fairview Heights presents program

Fairview Heights Missionary Baptist Church, will host a Deacons, Deaconess, and Trustees program on Sunday at 3 p.m. with guest speaker the Rev. Roger Williamsonn of Shady Grove Baptist Church in Bear Poplar.

Love Christian Center provides free meal

East Spencer — Love Christian Center, 102 N. Long St., will have its monthly Love Feast Thursday on Feb. 19 from noon until 1 p.m. The Love Feast is held the third Thursday of each month. Bethel UMC and Cooleemee UMC  joint service 

Mocksville — Join Bethel UMC and Cooleemee UMC at Bethel United Methodist Church Wednesday, Feb. 18 from 5:30 p.m. until 6:45 for a pancake supper and Ash Wednesday service at 7 p.m.

Donations for the pancake supper will go to the Summer Food Bags Program.

Bell Tower Ringers at First Presbyterian 

At First Presbyterian Church of Salisbury onSunday, Dr. Randy Kirby will preach and the Bell Tower Ringers (handbells) will play during the 11 a.m. worship service.

Next week, the Lenten journey begins with Ash Wednesday on Feb. 18 at 7 a.m. for a breakfast of eggs, grits, sausage, bacon, and fruit ( $3 per person; 704-636-1321 for reservations) or at 6:30 p.m. in the sanctuary, where the 1st Kids will be singing during the service. The imposition of ashes will take place at both services.
