A 90-year-old man who survived a fire in his home Sunday has died.

Gene Link passed away Wednesday at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center.

Rockwell Rural Fire Chief Alan Shinn said he was told Wednesday that Link had died.

Link escaped a fire at his home on Rainey Road near Faith on Sunday afternoon. He was uninjured, but was treated for smoke inhalation at the scene.

He was later taken to the hospital for further treatment.

Wednesday, Jesse Link told the Post that his grandfather had died. In messages on Facebook, Jesse said he found out Wednesday morning about the death, but did not know the details.

Link lived alone. When the fire started, he called his son, Tony, who came and helped him out of the house.

According to the obituary, Link’s funeral service will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, at Summersett Memorial Chapel.
