At its meeting Monday, the Rowan-Salisbury Board of Education will consider approving on second reading a policy that prohibits discrimination, harassment and bullying by students, system employees and others.
Students who violate the policy would be disciplined, including possible expulsion. Employees would also be disciplined and could lose their jobs. Volunteers and visitors who violate the policy would be forced to leave the campus and may be reported to law enforcement.
The prohibition would be in effect at school and school-sponsored events, on a school bus and at bus stops, and “any time or place when the individual is subject to the authority of school personnel; and at any time or place when the behavior has a direct and immediate effect on maintaining order and discipline in the schools,” the policy says.
Harassment and bullying, the policy says, creates a hostile environment and is motivated by an actual or perceived “differentiation characteristic” such as race, religion, gender or sexual orientation.
The board will also receive a report on the $4 million the school system has saved since initiating its energy management program in 2002
