A motorcyclist was injured in a Wednesday afternoon wreck on Interstate 85 in Salisbury.

And a Salisbury fire truck was involved in a minor accident while heading to the accident site.

According to N.C. Highway Patrol Trooper T.D. Cato, Cecil Kendrick, 49, of High Point, was traveling south on the interstate when the driver in front of him hit his brakes.

The motorcyclist was towing a small utility trailer. “He said he swerved and lost control of the bike,” Cato said.

Kendrick was thrown from the motorcycle. He was wearing a novelty helmet, which Cato said was not of Department of Transportation regulation.

Kendrick was cited for not wearing a proper helmet. He suffered fractures and was taken to Rowan Regional Medical Center where he was still being treated in the emergency room late Wednesday.

“Several people, good Samaritans, stopped to assist him,” Cato said.

Rowan County Emergency Medical Services responded along with the Rowan County Sheriff’s Department.

A fire truck belonging to the city of Salisbury was slightly damaged en route to the scene.

According to Trooper J.L. Deal, the truck was traveling north on the interstate and exiting at Exit 79 when it encountered a tractor-trailer blocking the exit ramp.

The fire truck was going to exit the interstate and cross the highway, then proceed in the opposite direction to the site of the motorcycle wreck.

Deal said the fire truck’s driver, William Elliot, 48, of Salisbury, swerved his vehicle to the right in order to avoid the stalled tractor-trailer. Deal said the vehicles didn’t hit, but the fire truck went off the road and into mud. It had to be pulled out by a tow truck.

Deal said damage was minimal. He said the driver of the tractor-trailer was apparently experiencing mechanical difficulties and should have pulled his vehicle out of the road. No charges were filed.
