Pop star Paula DeAnda performed for South Rowan High School students during a holiday dance Tuesday.

The students won the concert through a contest sponsored by Charlotte radio station WIBT 96.1 FM.

The station asked groups to collect food for the Second Harvest Food Bank and pledged to award a dance and concert to the winning high school.

South Rowan’s 23-member Junior Civitans Club collected more than 7,000 pounds of food for the Second Harvest Food Bank, beating out the 10 other competing high schools.

Ginny Comer, Junior Civitans Club adviser, said the club collected about 4,000 more pounds of food than the second-place winner.

South’s Junior Civitans Club collected more than 12,000 pounds of food for Rowan Helping Ministries in 2004.

This year’s food collection will provide more than 10,000 meals to people in crisis, according to a press release from Comer.
