SALISBURY — A juvenile has been arrested after police said that he broke into a man’s house and hit him on the head with a baseball bat.

Officers initially responded to a home in the 800 block of Mitchell Avenue at approximately 1:50 p.m. on Monday in reference to a man that had been assaulted, said Sergeant Justin Crotty, a spokesperson for the Salisbury Police Department. When officers arrived on scene, they reportedly found the victim lying on the floor of the home bleeding from a head laceration.

Officers were told by neighbors that they had seen a juvenile enter the man’s garage, where the man confronted him, said Crotty. The juvenile then allegedly hit the man on the head with a baseball bat.

Officers located the juvenile in the area, who fled on a bicycle before leaving the bicycle and escaping on foot, said Crotty. Detectives from the department’s violent crimes unit were reportedly able to locate the juvenile in Spencer with help from the State Bureau of Investigations. The juvenile was taken into police custody at approximately 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Crotty said. The juvenile was taken into secure custody at the Cabarrus Regional Juvenile Detention Center at approximately 8 p.m.

The juvenile had been seen selling items that were possibly stolen in the area in the hours before the assault, Crotty said.

Crotty said that the injuries the man suffered were not expected to be life-threatening and that as of Wednesday he was expected to make a full recovery.
