SALISBURY — A Salisbury man has been arrested after police said that Catawba College security noticed him on campus with an AR-style rifle.

Officers were called to the area of Catawba College’s campus at approximately 2 a.m. after campus security notified them about a man in the area with a firearm, said Justin Crews, public information officer for the Salisbury Police Department.

Security personnel reportedly told officers that they had been doing their safety rounds when they noticed three men near a vehicle close to the basketball courts. After the men left campus, the security personnel reviewed camera footage and noticed that one of the men had an AR-style rifle with him in the vehicle and notified the police department, according to Crews.

Officers then responded to the area, eventually finding the men sitting in a parked car off of West Innes Street. One of the men, identified as 19-year-old Kayvone Rashawn Norman, admitted to police that he had the rifle with him in the car, said Crews, but did not tell the officers why he had the gun.

Norman was arrested and charged with felony possession of a weapon on a campus or other educational property. Norman was transported to the Rowan County Magistrate’s Office, where he was released on a written promise to appear in court by Magistrate Jeffrey Holshouser.
