High school sports: CCC announces award winners

THOMASVILLE — Salisbury senior Mike Geter and coach Leah Huggins Herndon won major awards handed out by the Central Carolina Conference on Wednesday.

Geter was voted the Male Athlete of the Year for the CCC.

Geter was all-conference in football, basketball and baseball.

In football, he broke Salisbury’s career records for total offense (6,643 yards), passing yards (4,409) and touchdown passes (53).

He made a baseball comeback in center field as a junior and made All-CCC two seasons.

In basketball, Geter averaged 10 points per game as a senior and scored 809 points in his career.

The basketball and football teams won conference championships.

The CCC Female Athlete of the Year is East Davidson’s Fatima Cepeda, who starred in cross country, track and swimming.

Herndon is Salisbury’s cross country and softball coach.

She had a brain tumor removed as softball season was starting, but still led the team to a successful season.

In the summer. she runs the weight room for the athletic program.

The Charles England Sportsmanship Award went to South Davidson.
