Staff report

UNC’s baseball team opens play in the ACC Tournament on Thursday.

UNC center fielder Vance Honeycutt racked up several honors recently, with the biggest one being a repeat selection as ACC Defensive Player of the Year.

Honeycutt, who broke UNC’s career home record during his junior season, was first team All-ACC.

He’s one of 25 semifinalists for the Golden Spikes Award and one of 68 semifinalists for the Dick Howser Trophy. Those are national player of the year awards.

Honeycutt projects as a first-round draft pick by MLB in July.
