College softball roundup: L-R wins; seasons end for UNCW, Pfeiffer in regionals

ATHENS, Ga. — UNC Wilmington’s softball run ended with two losses in regional play at Georgia’s Jack Turner Stadium.

The Seahawks (33-23) lost 8-0 to Georgia and 5-0 to Charlotte.

Gradu student Mary Sobataka (West Rowan) had the only hit for UNCW in the Georgia game.

Sobataka batted .263 with 12 homers and 78 RBIs in her three seasons with the Seahawks. She played in 150 games for UNCW.

The 12 homers are tied for 10th in program history. Her RBI total is the 10th-best in program history. She had eight triples, good for sixth place in program history.

LONGWOOD, Fla. — Lenoir-Rhyne’s softball team scored in the ninth inning for a 1-0 victory against Auburn Montgomery on Sunday in the Division II Championships.

Winning pitcher Lauren Rakes delivered the game-winning hit at Boombah-Soldiers Creek Park. Rakes fouled off four pitches before smacking an 0-and-2 pitch for the game-winner.

Left fielder Abbey Nixon (Carson) caught a fly ball in foul territory to end the game.

Lenoir Rhyne (51-16) will play Indianapolis (59-5) on Monday morning. Indianapolis is ranked second nationally.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Pfeiffer’s season ended with a 6-4 loss to regional host Christopher Newport on Sunday at rainy Captains Park.

Kali Morton (25-2) took the loss in the circle. The Falcons, ranked 13th nationally in D-III, went 2-2 in the regional and finished 45-4.

Pfeiffer’s Emma Chopko, Charly Cooper and Kenzi Lyall were named all-tournament.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — A.L. Brown grad Kaylyn Belfield, who has played two seasons for Lipscomb, announced she’s in the transfer portal.
