High school track and field: North girls 2nd in regional; boys 11th

MOCKSVILLE — Brittany Ellis ruled the throws, Kimora Chawlk took the high jump and Aniya Brown piled up 28 individual points in four events as North Rowan’s girls track and field team placed second in the 1A Midwest Regional on Saturday.

Union Academy won the meet, hosted by Davie, with 104.5 points. North totaled 94.

Ellis, who is looking to sweep the throws in the 1A State Championships for the third time, won the shot put by a foot with an effort of 37 feet, 7 inches.

Ellis was on a different level from the competition in the discus. Her fling of 120 feet, 2 inches won by almost nine feet.

Chawlk cleared 5 feet, 2 inches to win the high jump.

Brown won the 100 hurdles in 16 seconds. She was second in the 300 hurdles (50.80), third in the long jump (15-10) and fifth in the triple jump (33-1).

North got a second place from Keynai Ambers in the 100 hurdles (17.29).

Allanah McArthur was third in the shot put (31-11.5).

Iysiss Kelly was fourth in the 300 hurdles (52.11).

North took third in the 4×100 (52.12) and fourth in the 4×200 (1:54.57).

The top four individuals in each event and the top four relay units advance to the state meet.

Dasia Elder didn’t advance to state competition, but her sixth place in the shot put added to North’s point total. Eight places scored, with a 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1 scoring system.

Ambers had a sixth in the 100 meters.

North’s boys scored 28 points to finish 11th.

Kemyon Oglesby led the Cavaliers, qualifying for the state meet in both hurdling events. He was second in the 110 hurdles (15.38) and third in the 300 hurdles (40.96) to account for half of North’s points.

North’s 4×200 relay unit advanced with a fourth-place finish (44.45).

North had a fifth in the 4×100 and placed seventh in the 4×400.
