High school boys tennis: Hornets reach 4th round of dual team playoffs

SALISBURY — Ben Lawson, Salisbury’s No. 6 singles player, clinched a playoff victory against seventh-seeded Hendersonville on Wednesday.

Lawson won the closest singles match, prevailing 11-9 in a third-set tiebreaker to give the Hornets a 5-0 lead in a third-round matchup in the 2A dual team playoffs .

The Hornets won the match against the elements and Hendersonville, 6-0. Doubles weren’t necessary.

Also prevailing for the second-seeded Hornets (18-1) were AJ Jarrell, Gray Davis, Bryant Davis, Reid Hlavacek and Soyer Cornelison.

The fourth round of the dual team playoffs will be held on Monday. The Hornets will be at home against the winner of Thursday’s match between third-seeded Pine Lake Prep and sixth-seeded East Surry. That match was scheduled for Wednesday but was postponed.

Salisbury had a first-round bye and won 5-2 against Community School of Davidson in Round 2.

The individual state championships take center stage this weekend.

Salisbury will be well represented in the 2A tournament in Holly Springs with Bryant Davis qualifying in singles as well as the doubles teams of Jarrell/Gray Davis and Hlavacek/Cornelison.

The team of Jarrell/Gray Davis won the regional championship.

Carson’s duo of Karson Sloop/Austin Atwell will be competing in the 3A state tournament in Burlington.
