ROWAN COUNTY — The Rowan County Sheriff’s Office is investigating after a shooting on Saturday caused one man to be airlifted.

Deputies initially responded to Atrium Health Kannapolis, located on Lane Street, in reference to a male who was admitted with a gunshot wound to the leg, said Captain Mark McDaniel, public information officer for the sheriff’s office. Staff at the emergency room reportedly told police that a 20-year-old white male had been dropped off by another male, who immediately left.

Deputies spoke with the victim, who told them that he was walking along Daugherty Road towards Lentz Road with his headphones on when everything began to go black, according to McDaniel. He did not realize he had been shot on the inside of his leg until a few seconds later. The victim told deputies that he did not hear or see anyone and did not know who shot him.

After speaking with deputies, the victim was airlifted to Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte for further treatment.

McDaniel said that the shooting is still under active investigation by the sheriff’s office.
