College women’s basketball: Catawba No. 1 seed for regional

The Division II Southeast Regional will look a lot like a replay of the South Atlantic Conference Tournament.

Five SAC teams are in the eight-team regional field. SAC regular-season champ Catawba is the No. 1 seed and the regional host.

Catawba (23-5) plays No. 8 seed UNC Pembroke (23-7) in the first round. That game will be played at 5 p.m. on Friday.

No. 2 seed Carson-Newman (22-9) will play No. 7 seed Augusta (22-8).

SAC tourney champion Wingate (22-9) is seeded third and plays No. 6 Anderson (21-8) in an All-SAC matchup.

No. 4 seed Lenoir-Rhyne (22-8) will play No. 5  No. 5 Georgia Southwestern (25-3) in the first round.

Eight eight-team regionals will be played at on-campus sites on March 15-16 and 18. The eight regional champions advancing to the Women’s Elite Eight will be seeded by the Women’s Basketball Committee and will head to St. Joseph, Mo.,  to decide a national champion.
