ROWAN COUNTY — One person has died after a crash in western Rowan County on Saturday afternoon.

The crash occurred at approximately 1:45 p.m. on Saturday at the intersection of Hall Road and NC 801 and involved two pickup trucks, a red Toyota and a gray Toyota.

A North Carolina State Highway Patrol trooper said that one person, identified as 25-year-old Laura Junette Luther, died from injuries sustained in the crash. Luther was the passenger in the red truck, which was driven by 27-year-old Dillon Hugh Smith.

The crash occurred after Smith was traveling south on Hall Road, eventually coming to a stop at the stop sign. He then allegedly proceeded into the intersection, failing to yield to the gray truck, which was heading East on NC 801. The two trucks collided, causing Smith’s truck to travel off the roadway and come to an uncontrolled stop when it crashed into Elsie’s, the trooper said.

The gray Toyota also traveled off the road and collided with a telephone pole. The driver of the gray Toyota refused treatment by emergency personnel, according to a West Rowan Volunteer Fire Department official on scene.

Smith was transported to Atrium Health Cabarrus with non-life-threatening emergencies and is “expected to make a full recovery,” the trooper said.

Smith has been charged with failure to yield the right of way and misdemeanor causing death by motor vehicle, according to the trooper.
