EAST SPENCER — Multiple dogs were rescued after a bedroom caught fire in an East Spencer residence Monday night.

Firefighters responded to the home, located in the 600 block of Pine Tree Drive, at approximately 8:20 p.m. to reports of a structure fire. When they arrived, they confirmed that the fire had only reached the limits of the bedroom. Firefighters were able to quickly contain the fire to the bedroom and prevented any fire damage to the rest of the house, East Spencer Fire Chief Shawn McBride said. Firefighters had a knockdown on the flames approximately 20 minutes later. The bedroom suffered from heat damage, but the rest of the home only suffered smoke damage.

The occupants of the home were inside at the time of the fire but were able to escape. Firefighters were then able to rescue multiple dogs from the home. McBride said that they could not be absolutely certain that every dog had been rescued, but that there had been no signs of remaining animals on searches. At least five dogs were contained in the front yard in the aftermath of the rescue.

East Spencer, Salisbury, Spencer, Union, Ellis, Granite Quarry and Miller’s Ferry fire departments along with Rowan Rescue Squad and Rowan EMS combined in the emergency efforts.

Fire marshals are investigating the cause of the fire.
