Suspect in Kannapolis murder arrested

KANNAPOLIS — A man suspected of being involved in a shooting that left one man dead in Kannapolis has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder.

Mark Marion Herron, 34, was arrested and charged with first-degree murder and assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury on Saturday. Herron was arrested by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Violent Criminal Apprehension Team at a hotel in Charlotte. He was placed in the Cabarrus County Jail and is currently being held without bond, according to a release from the city of Kannapolis.

Herron was charged in relation to a shooting that left one man dead and another in the hospital with serious injuries on Jan. 7. Officers with the Kannapolis Police Department responded at approximately 2 a.m. to reports of a shooting at the S&M E-Juice store on South Cannon Boulevard. There, they found two people suffering from gunshot wounds. Both were taken to Atrium Cabarrus where 23-year-old Shovontae Shikim Byers died from his injuries.
