SALISBURY – Duke Energy’s power outage map shows more than 700 buildings have reported outages during Tuesday’s storm. The National Weather Service has issued a tornado watch until 6 p.m. and updated the flood watch to continue through 10 p.m. for most of North Carolina, including Rowan County.

Rowan County had been placed under a wind warning due to the strong winds anticipated during the storm. The winds and rain have combined to knock down trees and utility poles throughout Rowan County. Stokes Ferry Road was shut down in the area of the Sills Drive intersection because of a utility pole being broken, causing power lines to fall into the roadway.

Multiple other departments have reported trees, power lines and cable lines being knocked over in the storm and restricting roadways and Salisbury Fire Department has asked residents to remain wary of power lines that appear to be downed, asking people who notice downed lines to stay away and report the damage to their local police department.

According to the NWS, the primary threats for the tornado watch 5 are:

  • A few tornadoes likely with a couple intense tornadoes possible
    • Widespread damaging winds and isolated significant gusts to 75 mph likely
    • Isolated large hail events to 1 inch in diameter possible
