SALISBURY — David John Austin, 29, of China Grove, was charged with felony assault by strangulation after an apparent violent domestic dispute on Wednesday

Austin allegedly attacked his girlfriend, who attempted to leave during an argument, by striking her several times with his fist, striking her with a baseball bat, held her down on a bed with his hands around her throat, resulting in bruising. Austin allegedly destroyed his girlfriend’s phone; his mother ended the assault.

Austin’s girlfriend went to the Rowan County magistrate’s office to report the assault, and a warrant was issued for his arrest. He was taken into custody on Thursday.

In other crime reports:

• There were two reports of stolen vehicles last week. The first was stolen from Enterprise between 10 p.m. on Thursday and 8 a.m. on Friday The second was stolen from Vanderford Street at about 1 a.m. on Saturday.

• A cashier working the drive-thru window at Wendy’s had a drink thrown at her unexpectedly by a customer. Salisbury Police Department followed up on the vehicle’s license plate, but the owner does not match the description of the driver.

• Kelvin Leon Cain, 26, was arrested and charged with felony possession of a schedule VI controlled substance with intent to manufacture after a traffic stop on Friday. Cain was stopped after he pulled out in front of an officer who then had to perform evasive maneuvers to avoid colliding with Cain’s vehicle. Cain was reportedly acting erratic and a search discovered cannabis, a scale and weapons.

• Alesia Danielle Franklin, 31, was charged with felony uttering a forged instrument on Thursday after Franklin allegedly tried to make payment with an invalid cashier’s check.
