The Rowan County Veterans Council has announced that this year’s events for Memorial Day, on May 25, have been canceled.
Mark Beaver said, as president of the council, it was the decision of the executive committee to make what was a tough decision during the COVID-19 pandemic. One hallmark of the Memorial Day events has been a gathering at the Salisbury National Cemetery Annex to commemorate those who gave their lives.
“With the amount of the different organizations that participate in these events,” Beaver said. “The council was concerned for everyone’s safety and health. With the COVID-19 mandate from the governor addressing large gatherings. As president of the council, I would like to thank all of past and present Veterans for their service to our great nation, Gold Star families and Blue Star mothers.”
Beaver said the veterans council hopes to be able to plan for the annual Nov. 11 Veterans Day events.
