SALISBURY — A Salisbury man was charged Thursday with marijuana possession and a weapon violation after someone reported hearing gunshots being fired in the area of West 15th Street before midnight.

Cedrick Leon Matchett II, 29, of Overbook Road, was charged with misdemeanor possession of a schedule four controlled substance and felony possession of a firearm by a felon.

Salisbury Police Sgt. Russ DeSantis said someone reported hearing gunshots around 11:30 p.m. and said an unidentified male was shooting.

Officers saw a gray Crown Victoria traveling through Pine Hill Apartment complex. The vehicle stopped and the officer asked the driver, later identified as Matchett, if he’d heard gunshots. Matchett said he had not, according to police

Matchett then walked into an apartment. The officer looked inside the vehicle and could see a bag of marijuana and a handgun sitting in the center console. The officer went to the door of the apartment and asked to speak with Matchett again.

Matchett was detained and eventually arrested after it was determined he was a felon and not legally allowed to possess a firearm. The officer seized the marijuana and the gun.

Matchett told the officer he was bringing the weapon to a family member.
