Volunteers will step in to help feed students over spring break

SALISBURY – Rowan-Salisbury Schools bus drivers and nutrition workers who have been delivering meals for the past three weeks will be getting some time off thanks to spring break, which begins Monday.

With travel and business restricted as well as an order from the state to shelter in place, kids will be sticking around Salisbury for spring break and the district reached out to community groups to help feed students while normal staff  that delivers meals will be off of work. The district has pulled together a number of local organizations, mostly churches, who have volunteered to serve students during the break. Families will be able to pick up food from a number of locations listed at the end of this story.

Because of layoffs from the COVID-19 outbreak, RSS Chief Legal Officer April Kuhn said more families than usual are food insecure. Kuhn said the district is encouraging the volunteers to follow guidelines to serve the food safely amid the COVID-19 pandemic and that families should only get food as needed.

“The community support has just been amazing,” She said.

Meals will be distributed from April 6 to 10.
