SALISBURY — High school sports seasons are on hold at least until April 6.

A number of Rowan athletes and teams were off to great starts

West softball

In the no-surprise-at-all department, West Rowan senior pitcher Whitley Arnott, a Catawba signee, had 40 strikeouts and four walks in her first three outings for the Falcons (2-1).

Carson softball

Carson (3-3) has some big bats.

In the Cougars’ first five games, junior shortstop Kary Hales went 11-for-17 (.647). Junior first baseman Liza Simmerson was 8-for-15 (.533) with two homers and eight RBIs.

Salisbury softball

Junior pitcher Ellen Yang struck out 49 batters in the Hornets’ last four games before the break. They won three of those four and dropped the other one in extra innings.

Yang is batting .571. Caroline Cozart is batting .455.

South softball

Senior shortstop Madison McGuire started the season 9-for-16 (.563).

Carson soccer

Carson (2-1) has scored 10 goals in its first three games. Catawba signee Gracie Thomason has six goals and three assists.

Salisbury, which tied with West Davidson for the CCC championship in 2019, was off to a 3-0 start, including a huge 1-0 win at West Davidson.

East soccer

East scored four goals in its first three matches. New team members had done the scoring. Senior Adalie Harrison and freshman Lindsey Cook had two goals each.

The Mustangs (1-2) lost 5-4 matches to West Rowan and Carson but still had three players — (1) Landon Shuping, (3) Gavin McDaniel and (6) Ryan Brady, who were undefeated in singles.

The Rowan County track and field championships were scheduled for April 16 at East Rowan.

A team to watch if action resumes is the Salisbury boys. The Hornets got a lot of their football players to come out this year.

Salisbury golfers were strong in the first CCC event, especially Hank Robins, who shot 35. Salisbury’s team tied for first in a very competitive field.

South Rowan’s Andrew Coward (39) and Andrew Jackson (40) were among the individual leaders.
