SALISBURY — Two people were killed in separate crashes Tuesday in Spencer and Salisbury.

A woman was killed Tuesday in a two-vehicle collision after her vehicle was struck by a tractor-trailer while near the intersection of West Jake Alexander Boulevard and Mooresville Road, said Salisbury police spokesman Lee Walker. The crash came only a few hours before a fatal crash in Spencer that killed a moped operator.

The driver of the first collision who was killed has been identified as Treva Waller, 66, of Yost Road.

Waller was driving an older model Ford Mustang that is believed to have been leaving Alligood Automotive/Exxon at 600 W. Jake Alexander Blvd. Waller reportedly crossed the roadway toward the McDonald’s/Rushco Market at 601 W. Jake Alexander Blvd. when her vehicle was struck by the tractor-trailer, Walker said. The crash was reported around 1:30 p.m.

The tractor-trailer was hauling pre-fabricated wooden building materials. It came to rest a few yards away. The Mustang came to rest facing the opposite direction.

The tractor-trailer’s driver was not injured. Salisbury police diverted traffic around the crash at Lincolnton and Mooresville roads. Several patrons at both the Exxon and McDonald’s/Rushco gas station witnessed the crash and were being interviewed by police detectives.

The Salisbury Police Traffic Safety Unit is investigating the accident and more details will be released as they become available, according to a police statement.

Salisbury Fire Department, Salisbury Police and the State Highway Patrol responded to the scene.

Few details have been released in the second crash in which a man riding on a moped was killed. A Spencer police officer on the scene said he could not provide details.

The crash occurred just before 3 p.m. at 419 North Salisbury Ave., not far from Jefferson Avenue and a Bojangles’ restaurant. The cause of the accident is not clear, and there was not a second vehicle on the scene when a reporter arrived.

Assistant Spencer Fire Chief Bruce Seamon said his department provided medical aid until Rowan EMS arrived and took over care. Seamon said there was only one patient on the scene and no other vehicles present. Other agencies that responded included East Spencer Police Department and East Spencer Fire Department.
