High school baseball: Big win for West; no-hitters for North and East; South and Salisbury drop CCC games

Friday’s high school baseball

MOORESVILLE — West Rowan went on the road and beat the defending 4A state champs  3-2 on Friday in eight innings.

Daniel Sell was outstanding for six innings on the mound for the Falcons (2-0).

Casey Gouge pitched the seventh and eighth. He got the win. West scored the deciding run in the eighth on Gouge’s sacrifice fly.

Steven Smith keyed the offense with two hits and two runs scored. Gouge had two RBIs, and Andrew Kennerly had two hits.

Nick Merriman had three hits for the Blue Devils (1-2).

Merriman fanned nine on the mound. He was relieved in the fifth by Jake Poris.

It was scoreless until the fourth when both teams pushed across a run.

West went  up 2-1 in the fifth when Sell doubled in a run. Mooresville tied it in the sixth.

SALISBURY — Jackson McAllister had four hits and Jarrett Murray had a strong start on the mound as North Davidson beat Salisbury 6-1 in a Central Carolina Conference game on Friday.

North Davidson (2-0, 2-0) swept the season series from the Hornets.

Wesley Stewart and  Mason Everhart had two hits each for the Black Knights.

Losing pitcher Parker Lippard had the only hit for the Hornets (0-2, 0-2).

Salisbury was shut out until the seventh when Vance Honeycutt reached on an error, stole second and third and scored on a wild pitch.

CONCORD — A.L. Brown got off to a positive start in the South Piedmont Conference race with a 7-6 win against Central Cabarrus on Friday.

  Bryson Schenck had three hits for Wonders (1-1, 1-0) and also got a save.

Austin Lowery, Jaden Johnson, Aiden Schenck and Nathan Baucom had two hits each, as the Wonders banged out 13 hits.The Wonders built a 6-1 lead with a four-run fourth, and then held on.

Sam Yelton and Christian Thomas had two hits each for the Vikings (0-1, 0-1).

LANDIS — Oak Grove scored four runs in the top of the seventh and beat South Rowan 5-3 in a Central Carolina Conference game on Friday.

South got a run in the first inning on a hit by Ty Hubbard, and pitcher Nolan Eudy protected that 1-0 lead until the fifth when the Grizzlies (2-0, 2-0) finally tied it.

It was still 1-all until the seventh when Seth Polen’s two-run double put the Grizzlies up 3-1.  Tanner Tesh’s double was the other big hit in the seventh for Oak Grove.

Jack Weaver relieved Eudy in the fifth and took the loss for South (0-2, 0-2).

Carson Swaim pitched into the seventh and was the winner.

North Rowan took two games from Albemarle on Friday, the first wins for new coach Patrick Hampton.

Jonathan Spry pitched the Cavaliers to a 12-4 win in the first game and Bryan Lawson  threw a no-hitter as North breezed 10-0 in the nightcap.

GRANITE QUARRY —  Mattox Henderson pitched a five-inning no-hitter and struck out 10 as East Rowan pounded the Cabarrus Stallions 22-0 on Friday at Staton Field.

East (2-1) scored 22 runs in the second inning.

That wild second inning started with an error, a hit batsman and a walk. JD Basinger singled in the first run, the second one scored on a wild pitch, and then Charlie Klingler tripled home two. Jake Hunter socked a two-run homer later in the inning.

Basinger went 3-for-3 with four RBIs. Klingler only had one hit but drove in four and scored three. Blake White drove in three.

Hunter, Henderson, Griffin Warden, Wayne Mize and Corbin Durham knocked in two each. Cameron Padgett walked four straight times and scored three. Austin Fulk walked twice and scored two.

East had 12 hits and  got  17 more baserunners on walks and hit batsmen.
