Iredell Sheriff looking for man charged with assault with deadly weapon

Suspect sought

John Dexter Wines

MOORESVILLE — On Dec. 27,  Iredell County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a call for shots fired at 1014 Mount Ulla Highway in Mooresville.

While responding to the scene, the deputies received additional information that the suspect was John Dexter Wines, 28, of 1014 Mount Ulla Highway and he had driven away from the scene in a gray 1987 Buick Regal with a Pennsylvania license plate.

He is charged with felony assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill and felony possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Deputies interviewed the victim and a witness at the location. The victim said an argument began outside in the yard, and then moved to a garage. During the argument, the suspect pulled a black pistol from his pants pocket and racked the slide, ejecting one live round on the ground.

The suspect then pointed the pistol at the victim, then fired one round in the direction of the victim’s head. The bullet struck the wall behind where the victim had been standing.

Based on the information gathered during the investigation, detectives were able to obtain arrest warrants on Wines. While receiving the arrest warrants, it was discovered the suspect is a convicted felon, based on his criminal history.

The Iredell County Sheriff’s Office is trying to find Wines. Anyone with information on where he can be located is asked to contact the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office at 704-878-3180 or Iredell County Crime Stoppers at 704-662-1340.

Wines’ criminal history includes two counts of misdemeanor larceny, felony second-degree kidnapping, felony assault by strangulation, reckless driving to endanger, misdemeanor possession of Schedule III controlled substance, misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia, misdemeanor second-degree trespassing, felony serious injury by vehicle and several driving related charges.
