This month, the Rowan Rolling Pins 4-H Club used the new skills learned in their cooking club to prepare and donate Thanksgiving meals to those who may not be able to create the homemade goodness for themselves.

The Rowan Rolling Pins 4-H Club had its first meeting in May and now has many devoted members who meet monthly. The 4-H program is dedicated to learning by doing and that is the goal for this cooking-centered club.

Each month, these young people create a meal by reading recipes, measuring ingredients and working together. The cooking club also explores foods from different cultures. Many kids are creating and eating different types of foods for the first time.

4-H also strives to empower youth with the skills to lead for a lifetime. The Rowan Rolling Pins 4-H Club is led by youth who were elected by their club member peers. Meetings are run by parliamentary procedure with the goal of providing youths with skills they can use as leaders in the future.

At the November meeting, club members prepared sweet potato casserole, macaroni and cheese and mini apple pies to go along with ham and green beans to donate to Main Street Mission’s Marketplace in China Grove.

Main Street Marketplace is set up like a grocery store where neighbors who need assistance receive a certain number of credits or tabs based on family size. Twenty delicious home-cooked Thanksgiving meals were donated to this amazing community outreach program.

The Rowan Rolling Pins 4-H Club is excited to continue into the New Year teaching young people many skills they can use for a lifetime while having fun. The club would like to donate more meals in 2020.
