Area Athletes Update: Big days for Hargrave, McCoy, Reynolds

Area athletes update …

Pittsburgh Steelers defensive tackle Javon Hargrave (North Rowan) got to Rams quarterback Jared Goff for a sack and forced a fumble on third-and-7 from the Los Angeles 41-yard line in the second quarter on Sunday. Goff’s fumble was recovered by safety Minkah Fitzpatrick and returned 43 yards for a touchdown and helped the Steelers win their fourth game in a row.

Hargrave was in on five tackles in a 17-12 victory.

National Arena League

Adam Smith (Davie) signed with the Greensboro-based Carolina Cobras for the 2020 season.

Smith played quarterback and defensive back at Davie, but moved to receiver in college at Guilford.

Smith was a four-time all-conference player at Guilford and a two-time All-America pick. As a senior, he had 89 catches for 1,262 yards and 18 touchdowns.

Since college, he has spent time with the Columbus Lions, Richmond Roughriders, Triangle Torch and most recently the Cape Fear Heroes, where he had 65 catches for 850 yards and 17 TDs in the American Arena League.

CFL

Jumal Rolle (Catawba) is playing for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats and has five interceptions and 37 tackles.

LJ McCray (Catawba) has 47 tackles and three interceptions for the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

Hamilton (Eastern) and Saskatchewan (Western) have advanced to Sunday’s conference finals.

Former Catawba QB Danny O’Brien  played in six games this season for the British Columbia Lions. He’s 39-for-68 passing for 341 yards and a TD. He has three rushing TDs.

Pro basketball

Keshun Sherrill (West Rowan) is averaging 24.6 points and 6.8 assists per game in Turkey.

Keshun’s brother, K.J., is averaging 9.7 points and 6.9 rebounds in Germany.

Women’s college basketball

Bryanna Troutman (Salisbury) averaged 9.5 points and 10.0 reb0unds in her first two college games for Wingate.

Troutman had five assists and four blocks as the Bulldogs started 2-0.

Anderson also started 2-0, with some help from freshman McKenzie Gadson (Carson). Gadson is averaging 4.5 rebounds and was Anderson’s defensive player of the game on Saturday.

Men’s college basketball

Jailen Williams (Carson), a redshirt freshman at Claflin, scored his first collegiate points on Saturday.

Williams’ older brother, Tre, was a standout for two seasons at Claflin.

Freshman Cole Perry (Carson) will redshirt at Southern Wesleyan this season.

Amara Morris, who started his high school career at West Rowan. scored five points for Montreat in an 87-84 loss at Kentucky Christian.

College volleyball

Catawba senior Morgan Hester (Carson) has 2,163 assists and 827 digs in her career.

Lindsay Elmore (Carson) leads Queens this season with 84 blocks.

The SAC regular season ends Saturday. Queens will host the conference tournament.

Freshman Baleigh Hill (East Rowan) leads Barton with 255 digs.

College football

Livingstone defensive lineman Gibson Ziah made first team All-CIAA.

The teams was announced on Monday.

Army’s Sandon McCoy (A.L. Brown) scored three touchdowns in a 63-7 rout of UMass. McCoy had 52 rushing yards on 14 carries.

McCoy scored twice in the first quarter on two 4-yard runs and added a 5-yard scoring run early in the second quarter.

Charlotte’s Chris Reynolds (Davie) did it again on Saturday, and the 49ers came back to win 28-21 at UTEP.

Reynolds was 24-for-35 passing for 354 yards and two touchdowns. He also rushed 18 times for 91 yards.

Reynolds has accounted for more than 400 yards two straight weeks.

Charlotte’s next game is a Marshall on Nov. 23.

Kacey Otto (West Rowan) had a rushing touchdown and was 9-for-13 passing for 144 yards, as St. Andrews beat Point University 33-28 on Saturday.

Devin Turner (West Rowan) had a sack for St. Andrews.

Nautica Patterson (North Rowan) made four tackles for Greensboro in a 28-7 loss to Maryville on Saturday.

Teoz Mauney (West Rowan) had nine tackles, including a sack, for St. Augustine’s in a 24-21 loss to Shaw on Saturday.

In Averett’s 10-9 loss to Brevard, Jaleel Webster (North Rowan) had 9 rushing yards and 16 receiving yards. Sam Wall (East Rowan) had an 11-yard catch. JaVon Lofton (West Rowan) had four tackles, while Ka’seim Black (A.L. Brown) had five tackles and a pass breakup.

In Fayetteville State’s 31-17 win against Winston-Salem State, Jacob Young (North Rowan) kicked four extra points for the Broncos and had a 39-yard punt.

Fayetteville State will take on Bowie State in the CIAA Championship in Salem, Va.

Christian Bennett (East Rowan) made three tackles for Catawba in the 21-14 loss at UVa-Wise.

Gardner-Webb’s Jalyn Cagle (A.L. Brown) rushed 18 times for 61 yards and caught two passes for 28 yards in a 24-14 loss to Presbyterian.

Elon’s Kortez Weeks (West Rowan) had three catches for 20 yards in a 31-17 loss to Maine.

KJ Wilson (West Rowan) started at right tackle for Hampton in Saturday’s overtime loss to Charleston Southern.

High school basketball

Jayden “Juke” Harris, an eighth-grader who already has a nickname, is playing for the North Hills Christian School varsity team.

North Hills lost its opening game to Nebo Crossing, but Harris went 10-for-11 at the foul line and scored 32 points in his debut.

North Hills is hosting Covenant Classical on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Local public schools have a number of scrimmages this week.

A.L. Brown is scheduled to start the regular season at Mooresville on Nov. 18. That’s the earliest teams are permitted to play by the NCHSAA.

Football considerations sometimes cause early basketball games to be postponed. On Nov. 19, Lake Norman is scheduled to play at West Rowan; East Rowan is at Central Davidson, and Davie is at West Wilkes.
