Area Sports: Volleyball pairings announced; West Rowan gets No. 1 seed

Volleyball seeds and pairings were released by the NCHSAA on Thursday.

First-round games are Saturday. Second-round games are Tuesday.

West Rowan is the No. 1 seed in the 3A West bracket and will host No. 32 Piedmont.

North Iredell is seeded 17th, so a fourth meeting between West Rowan and North Iredell could occur in the second round.

South Rowan is the No. 5 seed in the 2A West bracket and will host No. 28 Bunker Hill.

Carson is seeded 18th and will be on the road at No. 15 Western Guilford in the 3A state playoffs.

East Rowan made the 3A West bracket as the No. 30 seed and goes to No. 3 Marvin Ridge in the first round.

South Piedmont Conference champ Cox Mill is seeded No. 5 in the 3A West and hosts No. 28 Erwin.

South Iredell is No. 10 in the 3A West bracket and hosts No. 23 Cuthbertson.

The 29th-seeded Statesville Greyhounds travel to No. 4 Watauga for a first-round matchup  in the 3A West bracket.

Davie is the No. 9 seed in the 4A West bracket and  will take on Central Piedmont Conference rival East Forsyth, seeded 24th, in the first round.

HS boys soccer

Salisbury won a shootout at East Davidson on Wednesday.

The Hornets (13-7)  didn’t play one of their better games, but still pulled it out. It was 3-3 after the overtime periods.

  Juan Salazar, Angel Quintero, and Joshua Portillo scored for the Hornets.

Assists went to Gabriel Fuentes Reyes and Salazar.

“After a couple of games I thought we deserved to win, but still lost, I felt like maybe karma got us one back,” Salisbury coach Matt Parrish said. “We came out quickly, but we were thoroughly outplayed in the second half. East Davisdon had an intensity and will we just couldn’t match.  We were very fortunate.”

Salisbury hosts North Davidson on Monday at 6 p.m. and plays at South Rowan at 6 p.m. on Wednesday.

In Carson’s 3-1 loss to Statesville on Wednesday, Pedro Cruz scored for the Cougars.

 

Jayvee football

Carson scored with 30 seconds left to beat Statesville 12-8.

Emory Taylor and Jordan Galarza scored on 4-yard runs for the Hornets. Galarza had the game-winner. Caleb Moore had a game-changing fumble recovery. Sam Pepper and Max Bradshaw had big games on the defensive line.

North Rowan rolled over North Stanly 40-12.

Amari McArthur had a 65-yard touchdown run. Ronnie Fennell scored on a 45-yard run. Kaleb Burleyson scored on a 38-yard run and threw a 40-yard TD pass to Kemon O’Kelly.

Khalil Davis and Jamar Jefferies scored defensive touchdowns on fumble returns.

Akin Robinson had a TD run and Lucas Graham threw a touchdown pass to Paxton Greene in West Rowan’s 14-0 win against North Iredell.

Braxter Barger, Landon Jacobs, Damarion Phillips and Jaden Neal led West’s defense.

South Rowan won 30-22 against Lexington.

Bronson Hunt scored on a 63-yard run and threw a 40-yard touchdown pass to Eli Spry.

Trea Rucker had scoring runs of 5 and 12 yards and two 2-point conversions. South scored a safety on a Lexington punt attempt.

Mid. school hoops

North Rowan won 61-24 against Erwin.

De’Mya Phifer scored 22 points. Bailee Goodlett had 18, and Dasia Elder had 11.

Hannah Waddell scored 19 for the Eagles.
