Area Sports: Carson girls win in first round of tennis playoffs

In the 3A dual team state playoffs, Carson’s girls tennis team won 8-1 against Southern Alamance on Thursday in a first-round matchup that was postponed by Wednesday’s rain.

Carson (16-0) swept singles. Lindsey Conrad, Maci Cooper, Carleigh Perry, Jadyn Kirkpatrick, Keeley Watson and Riley Isley won matches.

Conrad had the toughest match at No. 1, but she won on a third-set tiebreaker.

Cooper/Kirkpatrick and  Watson/Isley won in doubles.

It was the fourth playoff win in Carson history.

When the Cougars return to dual-team action next week, they’ll be trying to win a second-round match for the first time.

HS volleyball

West Rowan is still unbeaten and finished a perfect North Piedmont Conference season with a 25-11, 25-23 and 25-12 win at Statesville on Thursday.

Tori Hester had 17 kills and 19 digs for the Falcons (22-0, 10-0). KK Dowling had 12 kills and 10 digs. Carly Stiller had eight kills.

Kelcie Love had six kills. Emma Gusler had six kills. Brooke Kennerly had 23 digs. Ashlee Ennis had 12 digs. Noe Gaeta had 43 assists.

Carson lost a five-set struggle on Thursday’s Senior Night, falling to North Piedmont Conference rival South Iredell 14-25, 25-15, 22-25, 25-20 and 15-11.

East Rowan lost to North Iredell 25-21, 25-15 and 25-18 in NPC action on Thursday.

JV football

Carson’s jayvees won 36-16 against East Rowan on Thursday.

Jordan Galarza scored four touchdowns on runs of 4, 1, 15 and 46 yards.

Hunter Burris threw a 24-yard TD pass to Emory Taylor.

Burris ran for a 2-point conversion and threw one to Taylor.  Taylor ran for a 2-point conversion.

Gunnar Michael led the Carson defense. Weston Lee had some big punt returns.

Akin Robinson scored four touchdowns for West Rowan in a 35-34 overtime loss to South Iredell.

Paxton Greene caught a touchdown pass from Lucas Graham.

South Rowan won against Thomasville 22-14 on Thursday.

Bronson Hunt had a 20-yard TD run. Trea Rucker had a 63-yard TD run. Wisdom Simms had a 20-yard TD run.

Rucker and Simms had 2-point conversions.

A.L. Brown won 22-14 against Cox Mill on Thursday.

West Forsyth beat Davie 34-23 on Thursday.

Alex Summers was 14-for-27 passing for 262 yards and two TDs and ran for a TD for the War Eagles.

JV volleyball

South Rowan won against Salisbury in three hard-fought sets on Thursday.

McKinley Faw had six kills and 14 digs for the Raiders. Kali Nelson had six kills and 20 digs. Ava Huffman had six kills and 14 digs. Emma Owens had 20 assists and 10 digs. Bailey Fisher had 16 digs.  Caroline Barbee had 15 digs. Tamaria Rhyne had four kills.

College soccer

Catawba’s women won 4-3 against No. 8 Lenoir-Rhyne on Wednesday.

Shelby Vasich, Sarah Bissett, Peyton Pruitt  and Courtney Reavis scored for the Indians.

Catawba’s women fell to Mount Olive  4-3 on Thursday afternoon at the Walker Tennis Center.
