CHINA GROVE — The Gospel Voices of Statesville will perform in concert at 6 p.m. Saturday at the Price of Freedom Museum, 2420 Weaver Road.

The concert is the third in the museum’s Old School Gospel Series, which is held in the restored auditorium of the museum, the former Patterson School.

The Gospel Voices’ appearance is sponsored by E.H. Montgomery General Store, home of Bluegrass Friday Nights in Gold Hill.

Admission is free, and refreshments will be offered.

Featured Saturday on piano will be Matthew Weaver, who for many years has been the N.C. Piano Champion at the N.C. State Fair.

Clay Lunsford, president of the N.C. Thumb and Finger Style Guitar Players Association, also is part of the group.

“The atmosphere and excellent sound qualities of the auditorium bring to mind the older style of gospel music that typically includes hymns, Southern gospel songs, camp meeting songs and more recent tunes done in a bluegrass or acoustic style,” said Jeff McCorkle, a gospel performer and longtime volunteer at the museum.

“The use of the older style gospel music housed in the old school building generated the name for the Old School Gospel Series.”

The Gospel Voices have been together for 50 years. They blend Southern gospel, country gospel and Appalachian Mountain gospel.

They also feature a full band with string instruments and Weaver’s Southern-styled piano talents.
