Area Sports: West volleyball rolls again; South still unbeaten in CCC

West Rowan stayed unbeaten with a 25-7, 25-15 and 25-13 volleyball win against Statesville in Tuesday’s North Piedmont Conference action.

  Tori Hester had 19 kills and nine digs to lead the top-ranked Falcons (16-0, 5-0).  KK Dowling  had 10 kills and six digs.

Also getting kills were Emma Gusler (5), Kelcie Love (4), Carly Stiller (3) and Emma Gaeta (3).

Brooke Kennerly had 13 digs.  Allison Ennis had 25 assists and six digs. Ashlee Ennis had 11 assists.

West Rowan hosts East Rowan on Thursday.

South Rowan stayed unbeaten in the Central Carolina Conference with a 25-15, 25-17 and 25-15 win against Oak Grove on Tuesday.

Payton Black had 28 digs for the Raiders (16-1, 13-0), who are ranked sixth in 2A.  Ashlyn Faw had seven aces. Kira Rymer had 10 digs, eight assists and 16 kills. Anna Rymer had 10 assists and 10 kills.

South hosts West Davidson on Thursday.

Carson’s volleyball team lost 25-15, 25-11, 23-25 and 25-20 at South Iredell on Tuesday in NPC action.

Carson (12-4, 2-3) hosts North Iredell on Thursday.

North Rowan’s volleyball team lost to unbeaten North Stanly 25-17, 25-9 and 25-6 on Tuesday in Yadkin Valley Conference action.

JV volleyball

South Rowan beat Oak Grove in three sets on Tuesday.

McKinley Faw and Tamaria Rhyne had four kills each for the Raiders (11-6, 9-4 CCC). Emma Owens had nine assists and 12 digs. Bailey Fisher had 15 digs. Kali Nelson had seven digs, and Ava Huffman had six digs.

HS girls tennis

Carson won 9-0 against West Rowan in North Piedmont Conference tennis on Tuesday to stay undefeated.

Carson (14-0, 9-0) plays at second-place South Iredell on Thursday to finish the regular season.

West Rowan (7-4, 5-4) plays at Statesville to wrap up the regular season.

West hosts the NPC tournament on Oct. 8.

HS girls golf

South Iredell shot 137 and won a North Piedmont Conference girls golf match played on Tuesday at Twin Oaks.

South Iredell was led by medalist Maria Franco with 41.

Carson’s Sophia Brown shot 42 on Tuesday and leads the conference for the season.

Carlee Patterson shot 49 to lead East Rowan to a thirdd-place finish.

Gabrielle Blabon (57) led West Rowan.

HS cross country

Mooresville’s boys and Lake Norman’s girls were team winners in the Iredell Cross Country Championships held on Tuesday at Statesville’s McAnderson Park.

Lake Norman’s Griffin Horner won the boys race in 16:53.

North Iredell’s Jonna Strange won the girls race in 18:32.

Local golf

The Corbin Hills Women’s Golf Association played a low gross/low net event on Tuesday.

In the First Flight, Susan Morris had low gross, while Beth Calhoun had low net.

In the Second Flight, Eileen Full had low gross, while Carolyn Ries had low net.

Fifty-eight GARS members played at  Lexington Golf Club.

Low ‘A’ Flight player was Larry Petrea with a net of 64.75.

Low ‘B’ Flight player was Jesse King with a net of 63.49.

Low ‘C’ Flight player was Bill Hathcock with a net of 62.86.

Low ‘D’ Flight player was John Mitchell with a net of 64.61.

Petrea shot 70 for low gross score. Hathcock shot low net score.

Ralph Luther, 85, shot an 85.

College football

Lenoir-Rhyne defensive back Eric Jackson was named D2Football.com National Defensive Player of the Week for his outstanding play.

  Jackson, a junior from Charleston, S.C., helped lead the Bears to a 56-28 win over Mars Hill with three interceptions and 10 tackles.

He also was SAC Defensive Player of the Week.
