Area Sports: Salisbury and Carson still undefeated in tennis

Salisbury’s girls tennis team stayed undefeated by beating Oak Grove 6-3 on Thursday in the completion of a Central Carolina Conference match that was suspended on Monday due to darkness.

Lillie Rusher, Meredith Burton, Sophie Chmiel and Kate Burton won in singles for Salisbury. Rusher/Margaret Thurman and Meredith Burton/Kate Burton were doubles  winners for the Hornets (8-0, 6-0).

Meredith Burton and Chmiel came back in their matches and won third-set tiebreakers.

It was the first loss for Oak Grove (7-1, 5-1 CCC).

Carson’s girls also stayed undefeated on Thursday with a 9-0 North Piedmont Conference win against North Iredell.

Maci Cooper, Lindsey Conrad, Jadyn Kirkpatrick, Carleigh Perry, Riley Isley and Keeley Watson won in  singles for the Cougars (11-0, 6-0).

Kirkpatrick/Cooper, Perry/Conrad and Isley/Watson won doubles matches.

West Rowan’s girls won 9-0 against Statesville on Wednesday in North Piedmont Conference play.

Winning in singles for the Falcons (5-2, 3-2) were Lacy Waggoner, Madison Smith, Mira White, Gracie Wise, Kelsie Crider and Elizabeth Bogle.

Waggoner/Smith, WhiteBogle and  Wise/Crider won in doubles.

 

HS girls basketball

Salisbury freshman guard Kyla Bryant already has received a Division I offer from UNC Wilmington.

 

HS boys soccer

West Rowan lost to Gray Stone 2-1 on Thursday.

Salvador Bautista scored for the Falcons, with Aleksis Suarez assisting.

Diego Menendez made 10 saves.

 

Jayvee football

North Rowan’s Kemon O’Kelly scored on a 58-yard run with 47 seconds left to send the game to overtime, and the Cavaliers went on to win 20-18 against East Rowan on Thursday.

Ronnie Fennell had a 25-yard scoring run for North.

Amari McArthur scored on a 9-yard run in OT, and Fennell had the decisive 2-point conversion run.

Isaiah Montgomery intercepted two passes for North. QB Kaleb Burleyson was a standout, along with defensive players Jamar Jefferies, Bryson Crisco and Khalil Davis.

Salisbury romped against West Davidson 40-0 on Thursday.

Leading the Salisbury defense was Jaden Gaither.

Reed Fugle had a 45-yard scoring run and threw a 57-yard TD pass to Jayden  Gibson and a 2-point conversion to Tyrez Miller.

Jeremiah Booker scored  on a 58-yard run and a 15-yard run. Kjuan Poole had a short scoring run.

Johnai Rippy had a 20-yard pick-6. Amario Hutley  and Nature Smith had interceptions.

Ledford beat South Rowan 22-6 on Thursday.

Wisdom Simms scored the South touchdown on a 2-yard run.

Carson had a shutout until the last four seconds and beat North Stanly 16-6 on Thursday.

Sam Pepper led Carson’s defense with a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.

Jordan Galarza (21 yards) and Emory Taylor (23 yards) had TD runs for the  Cougars. Hunter Burris threw 2-point conversions to Austin Cook and Seth Nave.

A.L. Brown won 29-15 against West Rowan on Thursday.

Davie won 21-6 against South Iredell.

Alex Summers threw a TD pass to Isaiah Lytton.

Brodie Smith ran for a touchdown.

Lytton also returned a fumble 30 yards for a touchdown.

HS volleyball

South Rowan stayed unbeaten in the Central Carolina Conference by beating East Davidson 25-12, 25-16, 20-25 and 25-14 on Thursday.

Kira Rymer had five aces, 23 assists and 28 kills. Anna Rymer had 22 assists, 19 kills and seven digs. Payton Black had 22 digs. Ashlyn Faw had six digs and five kills; Makenzie McGuire had six digs for the Raiders (12-1, 10-0).

Carson swept East Rowan 25-15, 25-11 and 25-13 in Thursday’s North Piedmont Conference match.

JV volleyball

Salisbury won against Thomasville 25-17 and 25-15 on Thursday.

South Rowan lost to East Davidson 25-21 and 25-19 on Thursday.

Mckinley Faw had 11 digs.

Bailey Fisher had seven digs. Emma Owens had six assists. Kali Nelson had four kills.

 

College volleyball

Baleigh Hill (East Rowan) had 21 digs for Barton in  Thursday’s 3-2 win against Shaw.
